If I go with a dashmount GPS antenna, instead of the roof mount one, do I still need the additional VSS (Can-BUS) steps?

On Wolfgang's website, he states that the dashmount antenna can be used as an alternative: (Wolfgang's ML Page: M-Class GPS cellphone antenna.

"GPS dash antenna
Another option is the Mercedes hideaway GPS antenna, part 203 820 0975. It comes with a HRS GT5 (f) connector which plugs right into the MCS or COMAND and 20" of cable. GPS reception on the dash under metalized windshields usually works, but may not be as optimal as with a roof antenna."

I can get a dashmount Mercedes antenna for under $100 which plugs right into the MCS unit, so I'm just confused as to whether or not this eliminates the need for the VSS source if the dash mount antenna gets this information from the satellite? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm working on the retrofit in my brothers ML first, and we already have a 2001 fiberoptic MCS installed. We also ordered the fiberoptic CD changer cable and, as long as the parts guy is right, the power connector as well. So from here, I just need to get a set of the CD nav discs and the dashmount GPS antenna (assuming I don't need the Can-BUS with this option).

Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks

No, you still need the can-bus adapter to make it work.

I have just purchased this Antenna, it DOESN'T come with an HRS GT5 (f) connector, which is odd, I have seen may pictures of this Item, showing the HRS connector. The one I just purchased came with a WICLIC connection. I have been searching for a place to purchase a GT5 Connector so I can crip myxelf.... But no luck!!

you could have bought the alpine antenna and be done with it.
That was my original plan, I had ordered the Alpine one online, Paid 25 extra for 2 day delivery...... Time went by and no antenna, so I called to find out where it was, and they told me it was on backorder until March 31st, and wouldn't refund me the 2 day delivery option, so I cancelled the order and ordered this one (5 day delivery from germany)!! Personally I like to stay with OEM Parts, and I would rather an unseen antenna if possible..... I ordered an adapter cable, should be here this week!! I have seen so many pictures online with this very antenna and HRS connector, so I didn't expect to have a problem!! I tried to get the dealer to confirm then ends that came on it before ordering, but the technical department wouldn't do it because I got the pictures off the internet, and the dealer has no access because it is considered a "Special Part" which they have no access to on their system.... So based on all the info I could find, I took the chance!! I also too the chance with the Antenna Adapter (A203 540 70 06) ... See how it goes!!
