I beg you to reconsider. Get the code scanned and erased. Sometimes bad plug can cost it. Don't think you would like to drive the car not knowing if your airbag is operative?
Than Harbor Freight sells special tool sets for cluster and radios removals.

If you are absolutely certain, you can search for instrument cluster, and they will teach how to take it out.

When you have the instrument cluster out, may I suggest that you also remove the bulb for Check Engine Light :D

State inspection stations often refuse to do the inspection when CEL is lit, why not disable it before :D

I assume you're joking?

FWIW most states that do a proper inspection actually plug into the OBD-II port, then you get a double fail for the stored codes as well as the broken CEL.

I agree with Kajtek1, at least first find out what is wrong before you go disconnecting things. It might just be the oddball connector under the passenger seat, but ignoring safety features of your car could cost you your life. Literally.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

I did it

Well you are in luck since i have the same problem on my 98 E300 TD and today i just removed it. I played with it removing the child sensor on the passenger side twice swapping with my 99 and it was the sensor. I don't want to put out the dollar for that sensor so goes the bulb.

Go to H.Freight and get the tool (see picture). I had to wait for weeks before it comes in today for that tool. I tried with coat hanger but no luck. Get to that crack at the wood trim mold and slide down to catch the hook behind those little push buttons by the edge. Use the steering wheel as leverage then pull out slowly rotate left and right of the dash. No need to get two puller one works just fine for me. It will come out as the dash is holding in mostly by friction. Forget about that special tool that costs quite a bit on Ebay and at the dealer when this $3 tool will work just fine. Forget about the coat hanger too trust me it will save you time and cussing since i already went through it.

With the right tool i was able to remove the SRS light on the 98 dash and the burn out bulb for the temperature back light on the 99 in just a few minutes. Without the puller, good luck:crybaby2:

For months i was frustrated not to be able to see the temp. reading and i found out how to do it at this website. I have to give credit to Bo Lou whom helped me a whole bunch to keep my high miles 99 E300 TD going on biodiesel. Any question i asked he came up with an answer like magic. The man is amazing smart:bowdown:
Now the climate control light bulb are burned out and i can't see squat at night:( For this one i had to order a pair of key dirt cheap on Ebay and it has not arrived yet.

One of the main reasons I buy Mercedes is because of safety.

I cannot imagine doing what you are wanting to do.

At a minimum, your passenger side airbags will be off. I've read that possibly all of the airbags may not deploy in an accident if you do not get this fixed. Search out a good indie or leather shop that will fix it cheap. But for safety's sake do not just disconnect the bulb.

The seat sensor is bad. Why would i want to get any shop to fix it when i already know what it is. I am 50/50 on fixing it just remove the bulb for now because it is irritating me.

wow, this is a pretty pathetic thread. If you can't afford to properly maintain a mercedes, sell it, and buy something you can afford to maintain properly.

Not fixing something like a couple bad pixels is one thing, but this "outta sight, outta mind" approach is absolutely retarded. If your life or your family's life is not worth $800, you REALLY may want to double check your priorities.

2ndly, every emissions inspection in the country will check to make sure the check engine light lights up with the key in the on position, so removing the bulb will automatically fail you.

A sad day...

You need to read it carefully. Who said anything about the CEL removed?I seriously doubted that the bad child seat sensor is blocking other air bags from working.

No need to write harsh reply as it doesn't help a thing. Perhaps you could point out where to get the child seat sensor at a reasonable price that would help. Putting someone else down when you don't know squat about that person will make it better????

The main intention of my write up is to remove the dash not the CEL or SRS light or anything else. I can't see squat for months at night on the dash and i was so happy to finally able to remove the dash to replace the burned bulbs with the tool at H. Freight.

I suppose that if you had bald tires, you'd cover up the tire tread, too. Low on oil, remove and throw away the dipstick.

I agree with the previous poster. If you can't afford to own/maintain these fine vehicles, please find a Chevy Lumina, Ford Escort, Ford Taurus, etc.

I've never been particularly good at sugar coating certain things.

Your fellow poster mentioned the CEL as well.

Yes the child seat sensor MAY not prevent the other bags from operating. However, are you SURE of this? Further, what if a wife, friend, or child was sitting in the passenger seat? Sucks to be them?????

The child seat sensor can be purchased for $109 at Auto Parts - Parts.com, For Every Part of Your Life. It can be DIY'ed if your handy with hog ring pliers and know your way around the seat assembly.

The only thing I know about you is that you are (and are suggesting others) removing a bulb which warns you about a fault involving the most important safety system developed in the past 30 years.

Congrats on getting your lights back.

Anybody that spends months

trying to figure out how to pull the dash cluster probably lacks the skills to search and see how cheap and easy it is to r/r the occ seat sensor.

Sounds like a perfect Jeff Foxworthy red neck joke.

"You know you're a red neck when you need to move to Mississippi or Florida soon, so you can avoid state inspection in California."

Very happy to live in a state that does not have inspections. They are a scam anyway. A cash cow for government coffers.

hahahaha. ridiculous. i'm pretty sure fixing the problem would be alot easier than ripping your car apart trying to fight a single bulb.
