I did a search in this forum about the normal operating temperature.

My water pump was leaking something aweful, so I had it changed(thermostate included), but wonder what the needle should be at during normal driving conditions.

My engine runs right at the 100C notch during normal driving conditions. When my engine is idling, it may get above the 100C - just barely halfway to the next white line.

When I start moving again, it goes back down to the 100C.

It does need a valve cover gasket....would that be the main issue then?

80 to 90 is good if your vac line and sensors are new, thermostadt too.

Valve cover gasket wouldn't affect temperature. I'd start with a radiator and cooling system flush, and you may consider a new radiator (helped cool my car down some). Mine was <$200 from AutohausAZ (your price may vary), and I considered it cheap insurance for a 30 year old car. Also pretty easy to change out, if you want to do it yourself...on a scale of 1-10 R&R of the radiator is about a 2.5.

90C here in So Cal is good, your aux fan won't turn on until 105C.

I believe the shop that replaced my water pump did the rad/system coolant flush already. My radiator looks almost new..but the black deposits in my coolant reservior don't make me feel confident that there isn't a blockage somewhere.

I don't know about the sensors, but the dash engine temp gauge is doing the same as before the water pump/thermostat was replaced. hmmm.

Thanks Chadahar - It has kicked in before, but I only noticed it when I am stopped; in park; and about to exit my car.

Thanks to all of you. Is the thermostat pretty easy to get to?

I haven't a clue as to the ease of replacing the thermostat in a Gen II ^ cylinder, have never worked on one, V8's yeah I can tell you about those.
