With the climbing prices of gas, I was wondering how bad are the V8's for use as daily drivers? what's the avg. gas mileage you guys are getting in the E320's/E420's? just curious. My 300e is getting arund 18 mpg in city driving.

My 2002 430 engine in a w208 chasis gets about 16 to 17 mpg average throughout the full range of driving. On a short roadtrip over Easter, i got 24.9 mpg without the cruise control...That was impressive! My motor is putting out 275hp stock and w/ mods, about 295hp. My 91 300e is new to me this week and i got about 18 or so but thats because i have a tenancy to get on it more because i usually just drive 8's. Id rather opt for the extra power of an 8 almost any day at a annual cost of maybe $300-500 more which is well worth it to me. That figure is of coarse not including maintenance, insurance, etc...Just gas.[:D]

Did you mean E420s/E500? E320 is a 6 like yours.

Yeap,
I did mean the I6 E320, mine is a SOHC with 12 valves. I was wondering how good or bad is the DOHC 24 valve I6 in the real world. I also have a Honda Accord V6 coupe and the EPA is 21city/28highway and on normal driving all I get is 19.5 mpg in the city.

My 300 CE CV is a 24-valve 3.2 liter I6. It's getting 23 MPG on premium fuel in mixed highway and city driving. I do have a heavy right foot, but don't chirp the tires.

Cheers!

The E320 I used to drive always seemed to do about 21 mpg in town and up to 28 mpg on the motorway.

Fuel here is the the equivalent to $7 a gallon , what does it cost in the US ?

Needless to say , big older Mercs are cheap as chips ( fries) except for diesel estates.

I could easily swap my W124 for a very well specc'd S500 for example.

Gas here in the US at a record high as of now ranging from $2/gallon to $3.50/gallon depending upon where you live. As far as a S500 being cheap as chips as you say, ill take two please[:D].

If your daily driving consists of mainly city. Do yourself a favor and stay with a 6 cylinder. My V8 does not like stop and go city traffic nor does it do well with mpg. The 124 V8 motorcars are in their element on the motorway with lots of air to cool their overstuffed engine bays. Highway mileage was only 19 or 20 at best, about the same for the 500.

2 to 3,50 dollars a gallon? Wauw, I wish we had that here. In the Netherlands we pay more than 11 dollars a gallon. [xx(] So no 8's here to drive around in, unless you've won the lottery.

I am getting about 23 to 25 mpg running back and forth to work with my 94' E420. 90 mile round trip commute, mostly highway @ 85 mph, some stop and go for errands, etc.

We took a road trip with it last month, I averaged about 28 mpg with all highway driving, I even got 30 on a couple of tanks! All of this driving about 80 mph with four people and way too much luggage in the car [8D]

My "half-V8" (R4 16v DOHC) daily driver gives me an average overall of 24MPG (US gal.) = 29,4MPG (imp.) = 9,6l/100km
Maximum over a tank was 32,5MPG (US gal.) = 39MPG (imp.) = 7,25l/100km
Minimum was 18,7MPG (US gal.) = 22.5MPG(imp.) = 12.6l/100km
Cruising on the highway up to 100MPH (160km/h) is about 26,5-29,5MPG (US gal.) = 29,5-31,8MPG (imp.) = 8-9l/100km

I just picked up a 1988 300E (with 95K miles) and I seem to be getting only about 15 mpg. Maybe because this is my first automatic and my first car with more than 4 cylinders and I've been zipping along enjoying the power and smoothness (stop giggling you V8 owners!). Or maybe it just needs a tune-up. I've had the car two weeks and do 90% city driving.

I'd be thrilled getting 19-21 mpg around town as that was what I got with my '86 190E 5sp (I'd get 30+ on the highway with that car but am not expecting that with the 300E).

I just paid $2.33/gal for 93 octane here in Southeastern Connecticut.

You paid "only $2.33 in Conn" and your not outraged??
My 91 300e window sticker reads 18 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. Those are w/ extremely ideal conditions. 15 mpg on a car that old seems right to me. Do a tune up on items as needed and you'll increase by a very small margain. welcome to forum, bc[8D]
