Hi guys. My cylinder head is toast and i need to get a replacement head for my 1998 S320. Problem is it's very hard to look for one here in manila. Either they'll charge an arm and a leg or head is warped.

I found a better one though and a very reasonable price but problem is it came from a 1995 C36 AMG. Will the C36 head fit my S320? I beleive c36 are M104 too?

Thanks.

What happened to the head that put it in the toast category? If the head gasket let go, it is due to a head gasket design flaw.

A competent machine shop shouldn't have any problem resurfacing the head and any related valve guide, steam seal needs.

I have oil in the cooling system and was having over pressure. When we took out the head to have it checkedfor warpage it came out negative for warp but it was already machined by the former owner. Problem was they over did the machining and was way below spec. They shaved too much.

I little update.. I decided to try and got the 1995 C36 amg cyl.head. Physically it is identical. All the holes and passages are the same. Even my new cylinder head gasket is a perfect fit. Shop measured everything and was the same. Checked for warpage and passed. The only difference i could see is the c36 head was ported and polished.

Also the valve guides and seals are new when I got the head.

The shop now is putting everything back. I hope when the car starts every thing will be ok. I will keep you guys updated if the c36 head on a 98 s320 will be a success.

Yeah, the AMG head is the same except for the port/polish, which will only help your performance. Should be fine.

Final update.
Been using the car for the past few days and all is normal. Temp. And hose pressure.

Noticable difference is low end toque has improved significantly. Smoother acceleration thru out the rev range till redline. HP is the same.

Shop that did my car installed a 71'c thermostat which I hate. Will be changing that to a 87'c soon.

So, final is 1995 C36 amg cylinder head will work in a 1998 s320.

Congrats on your unexpected upgrade. Re: thermostat, is there any particular reason for that? Mine sits at 80*c but I've seen peeps say 90 is better. Using 10W-40.

They changed it to 71 because they said that it'll help in manila heat and super heavy traffic.

I wanted 87 because that was the original design of the engine. I beleive that if everything is in order no matter how hot the country is , all will be ok.
