The transmission just went on my car. Was driving the car home. Stopped at the stop sign. Pressed the gas to go and nothing. I didnt get the warning message but car does nothing when you press the gas. Had it towed home and will check with mercedes tomorrow what my options are.

Everything was great and car was running fine. Has been very reliable up until now. When I change gears for example when i put it fron drive into park, it make a long groaning noise. I see price ranges from 2000 to 10000 +, anyone know what the cost of a transmission is. Just trying to get an idea.

Drive shaft

Turns out it wasnt the transmission but the driveshaft. The passenger side driveshaft broke where the shaft meets the outer bearing. I ordered the part to change it out. Comes as one unit, cost about $1100.00.

^ So that's the sound we were hearing when accelerating and turning left from a standstill (I met Gagan this weekend when he came to pick up spark plugs).

So, specifically, it was the left outer CV joint on the axle?

Did you shop around? I take it $1100 is at the dealer with labour?

Sorry to hear, but at least it's not the tranny, and now you know what the noise was.

edit: I checked Rockauto, but they're not listing drivetrain yet :( Time for another email.

edit: worth a try...sent them this:

Dear RockAuto,

I’ve emailed you before with info on common issues with model years 2006-2011 Mercedes B-Class (Mercedes chassis code W245) which show up in the Benzworld (http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w245-b-class/) forum. I’ve noticed someone actually paid attention, as you now list Starter motors, which are a common problem that I pointed out in a previous email to you.

Another item you may wish to source out are drive axles and/or CV joints, which seem to come with CV joint boots from factory which are too brittle and crack easily. I know some of your better axles come with silicone boots. If you do find a supplier for our “B’s” and decide to add to the catalog, please let me/us know.

Please note that the drive axles between the B200 and B200T (turbo) may be different.

Their reply (damn, that was fast!):

Dear Paul,

Thank you for letting us know. We are always on the lookout for new suppliers of quality parts. We don't currently have any that are able to supply those CV parts, but once we do we will get them added to the catalog. I don't have anyway to automatically email you once this happens. However, if you sign up for the RSS feed for your vehicle we will notify you as new parts become available. You can do this by simply clicking on the orange RSS button just to the right of the cars engine size in our catalog.

Thank you,

Andrew S.

Yes they are different, even in non turbos there are multiple drive shafts. The dealer need last 8 digits of your vin number to make sure it is correct drive shaft.

Yeah good new is it is not the tranny and now we know what the noise was.

I shopped around quite a bit and it is only available at the dealer. Also because of the multiple parts for the b200 non turbo, I dont want to risk buying a part that doesnt fit. The 1100 is for the part alone. Labour is only one hour but ill just do it in the garage. Allready have the car apart and waiting for the part.

With eastern weekend coming up, too much of a hassle to tow it to the dealer, probabily have it there till tuesday and maybe more.

Excellent. GL and take pics. if you can.

edit: remember that you can 'rent' some tools (you get the money back when you return them) at CT that you don't regularly use (like the axle sockets, balljoint remover, etc.).

Sorry to hear that! Have the tech see, if he can tell, if the boot went first and starved the CV joint of grease, or if the joint just went outright. Or whatever happened. Take pics of the old part for us please.

Edit: as a courtesy, they should throw in a front end inspection. Just saying.

Wow I think this is going to be a common problem. When I told a friend of mine who works at a VW, Audo workshop what happened to my car, he was able to tell me exactly what happened and where the break occured. Must be a design issue because my wife mainly drives this car and she is a very gentle driver.

4000, ouch. I thought I had it bad. Based on your experience, I shoudl check out the driver side shaft as well.

Paulo, I have opened up the car allready and the boot is intact. Even with the shaft broken the boot was still good. When I opened it up, there was no issue with the boot and it was full of grease. Ill take picks once I get the new part. Good work with Rock auto, hopefully they will have this part for us soon.

Well, I like to accelerate hard and shift late, once in a while, to give the engine a good workout, but I'm actually very conscious of the driveshafts lately. Threads like this stay in the subconscience. :-(

I had 365,000 km on the driveshafts in my 1989 Peugeot 405, they were both original and perfectly fine when we got rid of the car. Fortunately our B is at 139,299 km and it has full warranty for another 701 km.....the driveshafts or something in the drivetrain is clicking badly....

701km left. You are very lucky to have a warranty. This repair will easily cover the cost of the warranty. It is so worth it to have. Have you taken it in to have it checked out.

I will arrange for that on Tuesday, give the dealer a call or email. The extended limited warranty has already paid for itself twice over, before this latest issue.

Just finished changing the passenger side shaft. Car drives beautifully again but I still get a cracking sound, lol. I might have to change out the driver side shaft as well. Ill post pics of the broken shaft tomorrow as now it is to dark in the garage to take a good pic.

That photo will be interesting to see. Damn that your car is still clicking though!

It turns out my daughter's comments on the clicking in our car was actually a driver's floor mat that had escaped its clips and was being plucked at every time the clutch pedal was depressed. So that's at least some good news.

Hmmm, until it's cleaned up it's going to be hard to see what went wrong in a photo!

air con

Hi yeah I just had my gearbox sorted they changed the torque converter and the brain to all the bits inside look good but it Judders in high gear if you put your foot down but 40+ it great you can't feel the changing and got up to 113 mph and was so smooth, I was told I need to run it regularly and it will learn my style of driving is this true? Also when I start up the tick over seems to be up and down a bit the mechanic said about these cars the aircon is on when you first turn the car on and you have to turn it off everytime ?? If this is true could i have the on off button reversed so its off each time and if i need to use it i turn it on?

Hi everyone, I've had my B200CDI for five years now and have covered 60,000 miles. Last night on my way home I too encountered the dreaded "Transmission visit workshop" warning message and went into limp home mode. I was less than a mile away from a "Mercedes Direct" show room, so I dropped in hoping they had a tech guy onsite. They did and he put the car on the star diagnostics. He was able to clear the fault but was unable to offer anything else except to book it in at a service centre if the fault should reoccur.

I think the metal band on the CVT is in need of adjustment anyway as its very lazy getting into gear during the cold spells. Ite even worse if in "S" mode. I was going to mention this at its next service.

I was considering changing cars later this year, but I think this decsion may be brought forward after reading the thread here.

I have to say though, after sorting out a few niggles on the car I've been pretty pleased with it up to date.

Ross.

I don't know about the operations in the 2005 B Class because there is no listing of such a car here,...but with my early 2006 B (made in the fall of 2005) ,...the A/C does not have to be turned off at start-up as it is not on,...unless I put it on..

What is the "build date" of your B..??..?? This info should be on a tag somewhere on your car.

On Canadian B's,..the build tag is at the bottom of the driver side B pillar. Your car will probably be located somewhere else on the B.
