OVP is the Over Voltage Protection Relay... its in the compartment behind the battery, and is a relay, often red, with 1 or 2 fuses on top. I gather the 1-fuse version are considered suspect and the 2 fuse versions are supposed to be better, but I believe there's also a couple different pinouts so you can't automatically switch any of them, only ones with the right connector plug.

when the car is stalling and/or misfiring, is there strong smell of gas near the tailpipe? if yes, then its probably ignition related, if no, then it may be fuel injection related.

Once I had a ford van that would do that.could drive it around aft about 1/2 hr or so it would start dieing then stop. I would let it rest for 1/2 hr then it would restart. finally figured out it was a simple clogged fuel filter after replacing everything else! just a thought:)

Need a little more information than what has been provided. "Herky Jerky" conjures up an image but not of a car. Does it do this at part throttle or at idle or???

herky jerky

hi there glad somebody is looking at the problem i've got . ok this will happen driving down the road at any speed it will cut out suddenly press accellerator it will pick up but continue to sputter then will start to run normal again . I can start it in the driveway and will run normal for 30 secs or 10 minutes and it will start acting up again. in the driveway it revs up first and then slows then up or down and stalls or picks up and runs normal. the good news its getting worse.

Start by replacing the OVP and then let us know if it stops -- they are notorious and ALL need to be replaced if they haven't already. Without replacing that first, you may waste your money elsewhere on perfectly good parts. The OVP fails internally and allows the ignition system to cut out intermittently, and randomly. Hence losing closed-loop driving conditions.

No way to DIY fix it -- replacement is only choice. Most attempts at fixing it are short lived at best.

KAE is good to use -- it's what I have in both my W124's -- my wagon for the last 50k miles. Swapped it a few weeks after I got the car since it had the ABS light on and after some google searches it was obvious the issue.

Make sure you have the plastic cover that protects those components and it is positioned correctly. If its not, water leaks right on top of the OVP causing quick problems.
