I was wondering if anyone has gotten their seats
custom made and re-upholstered.

Like all automotive seating, the leather in the 350 seems quite rough and "card boardy". I have yet to see a car that offers "butter soft" leather.

I should be receiving my 350 in about 3 weeks
(Iridium with Berry Red Leather) and am considering having the seats re-upholstered in some high-end "soft touch" leather. (maybe a dark graphite colour)

I'm not sure how residential furniture leather will hold up over time, but since my company manufactures home theater seating, I can switch out the leather if there are any problems.

So has anyone done this with their SLK or any other car for that matter??

Maybe I should just install one of these [:D]

I don't like the idea of the seats being too soft, you need to feel some feedback from the driving experience (and some people get sick if the car is too soft, like my GF who can't stand cars with very soft suspension).

But whatever floats your boat [;)]

Did you get airscarf and heated seats? Those might interfere with a remodelling of the seats.

brabus and lorinser have put out some crazy beautiful designs with installing different personal interiors.....although i'm sure they cost 2 legs, 2 arms and 1 eye!!!!!

One can dream!

Yeah I'm with you...I think the seats are sporty enough for the car although I would like them to have a bit more mushy comfy feel to them.....but the shape and the way they make you feel like ur in a cockpit is great.

Caddy's and bmw's......have such comfy seating....I've always loved that. maybe it's not good to be THAT comfy while driving! ha!

Bobby, I believe the designo editions of our SLK's offer softer non-textured leather similar to home theater type furniture you were speaking of. For the price, however, you can probably do much better either yourself or at a custom upholstery shop. I did some research on this as I wanted to change my seats to a custom two-tone black/red combo. You're looking at $500-1000 for both seats depending on how fancy you want the seats, and more if you want the interior trim done. I personally like the texture of the seats since they hold me in place quite well during hard cornering. Softer leather would probably make you sweat on hot days and with the seat warmer, would definitely make you sweat. Softer leather will definitely not wear as well and be more prone to cuts and scratches.

Good points. I guess they made the seats that way for a reason. It might be kind of risky changing them out.

Also, I forgot about the airscarf. That will probably complicate things as well

Maybe if it was being used for a show car or something it may be worth doing.

Thanks for the feedback.

Bobby B, like you I've got a 350 Silver/Red on order for Sept 1st and also am going to get the seats re-upholstered. As well as brabus / lorinser / designo, there are a number of Specialist Mercedes bodywork/upholstry people out there, I do not of top of my head know where in the USA/Canada but I have found mine in the UK and it does not matter about Airscarf and you still get to keep your warranty as they are Mercedes authorised. You can get what ever colour or quality of leather/suede you want. Just keep searching the Web and R171 links.

Has anyone changed out their seats for something that affords more lumbar support and a more comfortable "fit"? The current seats are very uncomfortable for any length of time and the shape presents a bit of a problem for me shifting. We have the comfort option and if we didn't have that we'd probably consider replacing with Recaro or something better than what MB has installed.

Thanks,

Also interested in replacing the slk350 leather seats. The leather on the seats can be replaced without replacing the entire assembly - as dealer indicated. There gotta be some vendors out there making custom leather for these seats now or in the near future I hope.
