Funny moment today. My friend just got a new 07' SCION TC. And btw I have a 1985 380SE.

Our conversation:
Friend: Dude! I got a new car!
Me: Get the fu*k out of here... seriously?
Friend: Yeah, it's a 160hp 2.4liter four-banger that gets like 30 miles to the gallon!
Me: No way man... You should see my ride i've been working on lately.. it's a two-ton 155hp 3.8liter v8 saloon that gets 14 mpg...
Friend: We should race!

It's always good to see the reaction you get from someone when you say you drive a car that could be good competition vs. a Prius in a street race.. Yet get's a MPG estimate close to that of a Hummer.. :) Double the cylinders, 1.5x the liters, and half the mileage

But nothing beats a classic. I love this car to death.

The Euro-spec version of this car has ~218hp. What were the Germans thinking when they gave a 4000+lbs car a detuned 155hp engine? I'm probably going to sound like an idiot, but how do companies "detune" engines? Is it mostly like with different mechanical settings? i.e. in comparison to today's modern cars with adjustable ECU's- and getting more power from a car- can it be done with these? My guess is probably not since I haven't seen any large discussion about the topic. It would be nice to know though how the Europeans adjusted the engine.

germans didn't think it up. the yanks did. it's not detuned, it's choked with emissions controls.

EDIT: oh and a little less compression so the US engines cans stomach ingesting the piss pour gas out here..

heh, a prius tried to race me a few weeks ago.

i gave him a good lead, then bit down on the pedal. i pulled in front of him right before the next light, and gave him a healthy dose of hydro-carbons out my exhaust ;]

i <3 my old benz. you should see me f**k up ricers on the canyons ;]

Number 1, I feel your pain with the 155hp, it sucks more than anything.
Number 2 Batou, you are lucky you have the Euro version. I wish I had a euro 380.. Is it posible to transplant a 500 engine into a 380? probably a dumb question -_-

There was a post here recently, listing the spec of all the models / versions.
I am still looking for a non running Euro SEC to put the Euro engine/drivetrain in,
What is the HP on the 500SEC Euro? Thanks.

Fortuantely, torque, the main reason for acceleration times, had not been choked as much as power had been so 2 ton car can still accelerate surprisingly.
New S klasse 600 (2.5ton) accelerate 0-100km/h in just over 6 sec

Oh, it fell so good to drive unrestricted engine... not even the catalyst :p
