What is the function of this sensor? It was just replaced on my car. .Thanks

It sends a signal to the ECU every time the little peg on the crankshaft front pulley passes it. The ECU uses the signal to determine the engine RPM and then set all the timing off it.

If it's bust the engine doesn't run.

On the m102, m103 engines, the sensor gets its trigger from the flywheel, not the crankshaft front pulley.
