On Mother's day, me and my wife were coming back home. I was approximately 1 mile from home at a stop light and when the light changed, I pressed on the accelerator and got nothing but high revs and no go. Then she finally started picking up speed after about 7 seconds. When I finally made it home, I could hear a slight buzzing or humming coming from around the transmission housing. The gears were engaging very slowly but I did not hear any grinding noise.

The next morning, I started her up and shifted through all gears and they shifted fine but I did not drive the car anywhere. Then I noticed that once the car got to operating temp, that the gears started slipping again and the buzzing noise came back when in Park and Neutral. I checked my fluid and it is clean and red. No burnt smell. I have checked all vacuum hoses and everything is intake and tight.

I have 182,700 miles on the clock. The transmission fluid and filter were changed about 25,000 miles ago.

Is there a transmission pump that could be going south or the transmission itself? Any thoughts. Thanks.

Believe me it is! I always invite him over for dinner when he's not too busy. He's definitely like my brother. And he like to take his time investigating the matter fully before he proceeds to the next step. And the best part...he's trustworthy and reasonable!!!

We have a rebuilt auto transmission for $1250.00 exchange. Our rebuilts come complete with a torque converter and a 2 year warranty. Freight will cost you around $225.00 for delivery to a business, in addition. We pay the freight to get the core back to us.

Hi Prochambers,

$1250, 2 year warranty and free shipping? What's not to like?

I doubt you could do better locally.

Cheers, MBL

Hey MBL. Yeah I was thinking the same. Do you happen to know what an average price is to do the install work. Thanks.

Sun Valley is full of dismantler. If it is really a rebuild, you have to factor in shipping both ways, as it is an exchange. What is the core charge on top of the price? If you are asked to send your core first, take note of the numbers. Otherwise they may be rebuilding your original transmission. Don't take this as discouragement, just for a reminder to be careful. I visit Sun Valley at least twice a week. If you like, I can check the place out for you. I'll be back out there maybe once more this week, or Mo-Tu at the latest. Let me know. Hey Horst. Thanks for offering to check them out. I will give them a call to get the total price in case i'm missing something. In any case, I will request them to send me the rebuilt trans first and then i'll send mines back. Let me and us know what you find out. Thanks.

PS - I sent you a PM.

I dont know but that chick does have a really nice butt. I just sold a 722.350 transmission that would have worked for you and I only asked $700 so shop around.

I've been to and bought smaller bits from this dismantler. It's a trashy little hole in the wall and they are rude, abrasive and not very helpful. Maybe they are just too busy with turning over transmissions to have any interest in smaller ticket items. Don't know about their transmission rebuild quality, seems to be their bread and butter. But if their transmissions are quality product then that's all that matters, I guess. I just prefer service with maybe just a hint of smile.

I used Sun Valley for my transmission rebuild. the place looks like a dump, but they held up their end of the warranty at the tail end of 2 years, no questions asked even though they knew i abused the transmission....so i'd recommend them. Plus they are the cheapest professional rebuilders around me. at the time, they charged me about $1450 to pull and re-install the transmission. They are really knowledgable, but they aren't very helpful...you have to extract information from them...

Thanks Cyber. That's good to know. If I decide to go with Sun Valley, on average how much do you guys think it will be for the transmission to be installed? Also, thanks to all who have assisted so far with my dilemma.

Thank god that my sister doesn't work too far from where I do. Plus, she just got a full tank of gas treated by me this morning. She has a little Nissan Sentra. It feels scary driving in that car because i'm used to my BIG TANK.

I have called a couple of Benz specialist out here in Philly. Do you know that these guys want $3000. - $4000. to do the transmission job. Both of them will not allow me to come with my own rebuilt transmission.

I see why. $$$$

One of them told me that their WESTCOAST connection (wonder if it could be SUN VALLEY DISMANTLERS) was not available yet due to the time of day. And this same guy wants $1975. just for the transmission and another $800. to install.

Is this normal? I could see paying someone a few hundred to install but these guys are trying to just plain get over. My mechanic is very good with the other Benz mechanicals but not the transmission work because he doesn't have the access to the Dynometer machine and doesn't want to chance it.

My search continues...

R&R'ing typically runs 6-900 depending on who you deal with. I've already R&R'd one guy's Sunvalley box twice... he didn't enjoy that very much;-)

The fellow i use was trained in Stuttgart and has been @ it for over 30 years..he's a one man operation so I Know who is putting my transmissions together.
