If memory serves, it's the cold start valve. It acts like a choke. And yes it would be very difficult to start. It's just a solenoid. Remove it, clean it with carb cleaner, small shot of WD40. Put 12V to it and you should hear it click and the piston (pintil) retract. If it does, reinstall it (check the gasket P/N
1171410780). A new valve is about $150.00 US. The cracked boot is not a problem. But, check the wire insulation.
Good luck, Dave

Cold start injector electrical connection.
First find out if wires are touching (bare wire to bare wire), tape bare spots then do the following.

Easier way to see if cold start injector is working. Unbolt injector put in a plastic bottle(cut the top off a small Coke bottle) and try to turn the car over. if it is working it'll put fuel in the bottle. lay towels down so it catches the fuel spill.

Question. Is it required to shoot the 12v though it? If so could you kindly explain to me how i can go about doing that. To the plug or the wire being plugged in? I put a tester on the wire and i got no light.

Without the key in the on position, no juice to it. Key in on position it should have juice to it, or at it will when cranking. Cold start valve is initiated when starting cold, (20-30 seconds), and also from a hot start ( 5-10 seconds) if working properly. Long enough to put fuel into the bottle.

Test light on poles should light a test light when engaged. Alligator clips onto power and ground in switch will tell you if you have power. test lights are your friend.

Just to reiterate that point, in order to get power to the injector the key needs to be in position 2 (or basically the 2nd stop) where the idiot lights on the cluster light up. The click is easier to hear with the hood up.

I tested the connector when trying to crank the car i get a light from one side of it not the other... im not to good with electricity and all but is that how its suppose to be? Should i still "Unbolt injector put in a plastic bottle(cut the top off a small Coke bottle) and try to turn the car over. if it is working it'll put fuel in the bottle."?? if so ill get on that first thing in the A.M

Not sure if that is an L-Jetronic, but I have such a system too. My cold start inj was acting up, and rather than spend more and more time with it, I just unplugged it, and on colder mornings, just crank engine while holding pedal to floor. No problem.

But, do not PUMP pedal- just hold to floor.

Good luck.

here is a good article about the injector.

Hot Start Problem Fix

I would still remove the injector and do the bottle trick since it seems like you have fire to the plug. I would not run the car without the injector.

Does your car not run at all? Do you have spark?

The car runs occasionally i cant tell when its going to run but it does when it does i can cut it off ten times and randomly it will not start again and i cant figure it out lots of people tell me to change the distributor cap but im currently broke so i wanna know that its the problem for sure so im trying to narrow every possible problem down. im not sure about a spark.
