I just checked my manual, it specs HD engine oil to be used in the power steering system of my 416, however, the fluid that I drained looked and smelled more like hydraulic fluid. I've fully drained the system and replaced all hoses, what is the correct fluid? I'm tempted to run non-foaming hydraulic fluid, would this be a bad idea? Or regular power steering fluid?

The official 416 service manual states:

Steering - Power Steering
Engine Oil or ATF
10W (5W-20/30 in cold zones)
Qty: 3.0 L

I run 15/40 for hyd. and pwr. str. No problems, no foaming yet. Makes a good emerg. engine oil reserve. I only had foaming when I was running hydrualic oil.

Looks like I'll try the 15/40. I found on the mail list search that Jack felt the system could be run with most any oil or atf, but I like the thought of having fewer different spares to carry. Thanks, Seth
