So was wondering if anyone else had tried water wetter or Royal Purple's Purple ICE
I have as of last week finally tried out Purple ICE with noticeable results...had tried water wetter in the past with no results other than oily film in reservoir....The Purple ICE made the most difference after sitting overnight...probably mixed in by then...but so far went from the usual needle half point like 90/95-100 range up till 100+ stop and go be a thing if the past now its like 85 operating temp most of the time and will creep up to about 100now max in stop and go but drops within seconds of beginning to move once again recovers faster cooling...FYI can be found cheaper online but you can get it as a special order from Advance auto if you want it local some stores carry it in stock but in the back as it can range from like $11 online up to $20 advance was in the middle but IMO considering the heat of these engines and the havoc it has on things like harnesses its a good investment that and checking out Jims sensor mod have had that on my 140 since purchase about 2.5-3 years now...works great his site is K6JRF Auto Page my next project is since the results with the coolant additive has been positive ill try their oils next....

Those temps you listed don't sound normal. Have you checked the condition of your viscous fan clutch? How old is your coolant? As a point of reference, I had my S420 (totally stock) in Orlando last summer and the temp peaked at about a needle's width over 90 in stop & go driving. Once I got back on the freeway it dropped back down to 80.

I'm glad to hear that the Royal Purple stuff is working for you, but I fear it may be masking a more serious problem.

Food for thought for sure. Tell you what though we've had in the family a 123, a 126 a 140 and a 210. All of them run hot in the summer months. The other vehicles I have driven, (VW Transporter, Toyota Avenis, Mini Clubman, VW PAssat and more-have covered 3 years and at least 130, 000 miles in each), do not.
When I say hot I mean 90-100 degrees. The 123 we had from brand new.
It may never have been a problem on them but it just seemed odd. One thing I've noticed about all the Mercs I've driven is they do seem to run hot-I mean when you open the door to step out of the car you feel like you are enveloped in a blanket of warm air, it's almost like the entire vehicle has the Ready Brek glow.

It was in the shop not long ago for some suspension and misc work I couldn't do and I had asked to check the clutch since i have had it I haven't changed so no idea its age but they checked it and seems fine that and I have never had it get up towards the 120 ever or have it try and overheat since i had replaced my radiator a year ago so must be doing alright even when its 95F outside..

But also the thermostat usually i think doesn't open till 80C so norm operating temp should be a little above that correct me if im wrong...But I had in the past read a few threads for norm temps and mine has always been in the same as most...but the only reason i posted and am happy with it is the change was noticeable overnight slightly the same day but was more so when it had mixed in well...

The thermostat opens just above 80C and the fan clutch and aux fan just below 100C. So 'normal' operating temperature should be in that range. Perferrably the lower value.

normal temp for a W140 is anything over 80*C and below 115*C, it is okay for temp to reach 110*, depending on the weather, engine size, coolant age and concentration...etc etc

there is no need for any mods or aditives, please read the MERCEDES USER MANUAL for the normal operation temps.

It may be OK but I would suggest it's a much better idea if it runs cooler.

cooler is not better, here is why:

overcooled car by additives, or early starting fans/clutch will take longer to reach the normal operation temp of >87*C

= it will run in open loop longer

=it will run rich longer (at 9-10 Air-to Fuel Ratio, normal is 14.7AFR)

=it will create more carbon deposits in engine

=it will hurt the fuel effeciency by as high as 30%

=it will wear out your cat convertor by clogging it quicker...

there is so many negative effects...

the Merc is over engineered as is, it doesnt need more...

I confirm on this Temp's as i had my Car check't during the Hot Summer Days at Mercedes , i told them about the High Temp's wich reached around 105 but once the Fans kick in it goes down quickly ,they told me it is Normal while i was worried he had a grin on his face ,the Mechanic left the Engine running and we both waited for the Fan to turn on when he said !NOW! thats exactly when it turn'd on at about 105 this is with Air condition on ,40 degrees Heat outside ,it never goes over the 105 in standing Traffic,so since that Test i have never worried about it anymore ,i wouldent mind to have it go cooler but the Car is designed like this so leave it as is ,there has to be a Reason for it .
Ciao & stay CoooooooL:thumbsup:
