Hi everyone,

I bought an '83 240D today and while testing the brakes of the trailer it was on, some coolant sloshed out and onto the trailer. Upon getting the car home, I looked closer to see that the radiator was intact. I thought it had cracked because the car did come in contact with the front of the trailer.

Following the hose from the bottom of the radiator led me up to some sort of pump that seemed to be missing a hose that should have been coming off towards the passenger side of the car. This seemed to be the source of the coolant spillage.

So my questions to you are:
1. What is this pump sort of thing that connects to the bottom hose of the radiator?

2. Where does the missing hose lead to?

I can post pictures tomorrow if need be.

If any more information is needed, I should be able to supply it.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I think pictures will help to stop wild guess work.

The larger diameter coolant pipes run from the top and the bottom of the radiator to the engine - where you can see a thermostat housing and behind the (viscous) fan you can find the water pump. Smaller diameter pipes run from the engine to the cabin heater.

Thanks for the tip Army. I'm thinking it's the water pump but lets see if these pictures can help.

They're not great shots, I know, but it's tight in there.

You can see the tube/pipe/opening where the coolant came out. So what is supposed to be connected there and where does it go to? The reservoir?

Any help would be appreciated!

I also have a quick brake question but I'll make a new thread for that.

Thank you!

BMP: Do you just have the stock 4 cylinder in yours? I'll have to look and see if I can find the electric water pump/heater core

RMac: That picture does help but I'm a little confused by it. Hose 47 seems to be what's missing on my car but the piece it's coming from looks like it's on the drivers side of the car where as my "thing" is on the passenger side. Maybe they are different parts?

Where exactly does the fluid in the radiator go after it comes out of the bottom of the passenger side of the radiator? On mine it seems to go up to some device that's attached to the block and above the alternator then the tube is missing...

I actually had a feeling that it might have been part 53 leaking in the picture Rmac58 posted 'cos these parts are steel and they rust...

...but if part 47 is missing that'll do it too!

As you can see from the picture this is the supply flow to the cabin heater. Can you check to see if part 53 is still in place under the manifolds?

Thanks again to everyone for the help. Those pictures and diagrams definitely clear up the question. Unfortunately I just left for a short trip today so I will be away from the car until Sunday. I really want to find out if that metal pipe is there like in Rmac's second picture. Hopefully I'm only missing tube 47.

Thank you again for the help and I'll post any updates on the issue.

Heyo, I'm back and I have checked for the hard line...and I'm not seeing it.

I tried to take a few photos last night but didn't get anything great. However, in this picture you can see it's not there:

The end of the hard line (where hose 47 matches up with it) should be right near that angled bar in the first photo posted by Rmac. I'm not seeing it there. Can anyone tell me where the hard line goes to so maybe I can trace it even further? I'll be heading out to the car later to light it up and get some better pictures of the car.

If it helps, here's another picture of the area we are talking about:

I can't manipulate your photograph to show where I think it should go.

In your last picture the hard metal line should be running from the left hand side of the picture (from the heater) to the right hand side under all of the gubbins

so is there a way to by-pass the whole thing since I appear to not have this hard line?

What I'm mostly worried about is getting the car running and the coolant system cooling enough to keep the car from overheating. Anything else is unnecessary right now.

So I guess I'm wondering if this is some sort of overflow or something for the heater core that is just an amenity that I could do without if I just need the car to be running for right now.

Figured it out! It's the line leading to the auxiliary water pump then to...the heater core?

What do I need to do to complete the loop or to make it so no more coolant come out of this line but keep the car cool?

Will coolant come towards the auxiliary water pump if the heater is left off?
