haven't ever experienced anything like this in any vehicle I have owned before. Today I popped the hood while the engine was running and the heater hose going to the electric pump was twitching. I grabbed it and it would pulse very solidly, regularly. So I grabbed the upper rad hose and same thing. while I am holding it there would be a periodic bulge (not visible, just felt).

Any ideas what this signifies? I'm thinking failing water pump - but failing in a very bad way!?

You're seeing normal pulsing of the hose due to monovalve operation. Turn the temp dial to max and the pulsing will stop becasue the valve will go wide open. Turn the temp dial to min and the pulsing will stop because the valve will completely close.
