I searched on the web and previous posts and could find any instructions and tips on how to put a new one on.

I took the old one off, cleaned all the old glue put the new foam pad on the rear metal now and the two plastic side pieces but I just can't figure out a way to glue the vinyl in place before the front part gets glued under the lid.

I did one 20 years ago ! Seems like I cut the pad to fit, then wrapped the vinyl around the metal with the steel spikes and glued that. Then trimmed that. pushed the pins thru the holes and bent them over. Then stretched the vinyl around underneath and contact cement that down, then trim off the excess.

You can use your old vinyl as a working pattern.

I've not done it but looking at my '83 I'd say you have to remove the piece by releasing the push-on clips underneath and then glue using clamps as needed.
Mine is three pieces stitched at the corners.
I did a new map pocket and the sharp curves are tricky. An upholster told me to cut the vinyl on a bias ( ie at an angle- not parallel to the piece you are covering )where curves are needed because vinyl usually only stretches in one direction, so doing it at an angle allows more stretching to shape in different directions.
