I have a 1998 slk 230k.
The top switch flashes and the beeper beeps when I first start up for about ten seconds and then ten minutes later for about thirty seconds. I tried taping down the microswitch but no change. it happens with the top down or up. My mechanic says it is the microswitch, but I pinned it down with no change of behavior.
Am I never supposed to use the car without the trunk liner cover thing in place? I like using the trunk from time to time.
I thought about cutting the switch wire and splicing the wires but dont think that is too wise but jeez that beeping and blinking:mad.
Thanks

assuming it's like the newer SLKs, that "trunk liner thing" is basically the safety switch. if it's not in position, the roof won't go down.

Do you have an aftermarket roof module? If that went bad, you could get the symptoms you are describing.

The soft retractable cover in the trunk HAS to be in place (pulled back) for the top to move (or at least did on my 2000 SLK -- it's plastic now). If you can make it work otherwise you have a problem somewhere. Wouldn't surprise me that you would also get odd flashing from the switch. Button will flash red if you try to lower the top and the cover isn't in place.

If you make it work without the cover, you risk overloading the trunk to where i will pop the window when retracted. Try the R170 discussion area.
