Conversion to auto gearbox in 460

Hi
I'm about to convert from 5-speed manual to
auto in a long wheelbase 230GE 1985.

I've got a box (auto) from a 1989 GE.

Anyone know of any special problems with converting ?

For example the starter motor is on the opposite side, do I need special exhaust pipes to pass it ?

The 280GE and the 460 GD's has the starter on the same side. I think the 230GE has the starter on the other side. If you cant find a G auto box, you can probably use a box from a W123 230E/TE. I am not sure about the W124 ones... Exhaust should not be a problem, the manual and auto box are quite similar in size (NOT in wheight though...)

It is a bolt-on job or is it more involving?
Thanks

You need the right trans

The engine in the 230 GE is cranked over at a pretty seious angle to the right. An automatic is even more sensitive than a manual trans to being level in the car. So it's not just a matter of the starter being on the correct side, you need the bell housing bolt pattern to establish the correct angle between the engine and transmission in the car so that your engine mounts sit on the chassis mounts correctly and the transmission is level.

I'm not sure if an auto box was ever an option with a 230 GE, but I could check the EPC if I remember, and tell you which auto box came on them, if any.

If the auto box you have was one that came OUT of a 230GE it would work for sure. Beyond that, it's iffy.

What kind of "GE"?

While 230 and 280 GE both used the basic W4A018 4 speed automatic gearbox, the EPC indicates a different part number for 280GEs (4602700701 or 4602701001 depending on vintage) than it does for 230GEs (4602700901) This might be due only to engine mounting issues (like engine tilt and starter position), or it might be for some other reason, I don't know.

In general, converting from manual to auto you'll also need the kickdown linkage from the throttle to the transmission, as well as the in-cabin shifter and wiring to support the switches, lights, etc it contains. Not a real big deal, but things to think about.

Good luck!
