Anyone have any suggestion on how to remove contact cement? Particularly the type that the factory glues down the soft top with. Ya, I'm looking for the quick and easy way before doing it the hard way --> scrapping and sanding.

Walt,
I have used 3M adhesive remover in past. You still have to do some scraping.

Used the above successfully on boat gelcoat surfaces. For the hood pad and convertible top on my SL I used every solvent I happened to have along with scrapers and coarse synthetic scouring pads and rags. No problem hurting metal. Got the job done, but however you look at it, it is messy. I did it out on the lawn and got static because the solvent killed the grass ;)

Lay a rag on the surface you want to clean, soak with Lacquer Thinner, wait a few minutes, wipe the glue off, final clean with a small brass brush
dipped in thinner. Round pieces rap the rag around it. I do a small area at a time, maybe 12". Outside of course. Cheapest thinner you can find.
Also works great for removing old carpeting from inside panels. Just soak the carpet, wait, peal off.

Definitely best to take frame off and clean it outdoors.

After I got all the adhesive off, I polished the frame using metal polish:

Nice & shiny!

The glue on mine was so old and dry that I managed to scrape 90% of it off dry.

I used thinner to get the rest off.
