I have a 1994 G350TD which has had a very intermittent airbag fault for the past 10 years. Each time, the fault code indicates a problem in the steering wheel and most garages conclude the contact rings and brushes are at fault. Replacing them does not seem to have improved the problem and the light comes on again weeks later.

However, the specialist garage I am currently using, having been reminded of the fault history has now declared that the fault must therefore lie in the airbag unit itself and recommends a new airbag unit costing 800 euro.

Part number A 140 460 27 98 9b51 - black.

This is hard to justify on such an old car when it seems I can get a second-hand part for 50 euro.

But which one?

An hour spent on google would indicate the above part number replaced 140 460 11 98 and 140 460 12 98. These airbags would seem to fit W124 E-class (84-95), W140 S-class (91-98), W202 C-class (93-2001) and W210 E-class (95-98) and possibly W129.

Then on ebay I've seen 140 460 24 98 (leather with chrome star), 140 460 26 98 (regular with chrome star), 140 460 00 68 (from a 1995 W124), and 140 460 03 98.

These all look the same shape as mine - but which ones will fit and work? Will they all?

I don't mind slightly mis-matched colour or finish, but I want that SRS light to stay off!

Can anyone help with this?

I've just been back to the workshop for an update.

They have done a 24 hour test by substituting another airbag from a 1998 G300. The SRS light stayed off. When they put my original one back on the light came on again within minutes. I agree with them that this is a pretty strong indication that the fault lies in the airbag.

My air bag has part number 140 460 00 68 etched on to the metal on the back of the airbag between the large semi-circular warning sticker and the centre electrical connector. On a paper label it has 140 460 11 98.

I would be curious to know what vehicle models are listed in the EPC as having these part numbers fitted (also 140 460 27 98 and 140 460 26 98).

Anybody out there with access to EPC?
