26 looks and no responses. After reading some of the posts on this board, reliability is a major concern. The alternative to the clk 500 is the lexus sc 430, which is rock solid but also somewhat stodgy. The 500 with the 7 speed is a relatively new drive train. Are there problems ?
[8D]Here is your response!!! I own both the CLK 500 and the SC430--- two totally different cars. Here is my analysis based on approximately 2,000 miles on each car.
Performance--- The CLK wins hands down
Exterior Styling--- It's a matter of taste. However, the SC truly turns heads top up or down. The CLK rarely gets a second look. While on the other hand the stock wheels on the SC are a joke
Interior--- The SC wins this one hands down; quality of materials is top notch every where and fit and finish is phenominal. The trunk alone is prettier than most cars interior. The CLK looks cheap in comparison. However the seats in the CLK are far superior.
Ride--- The SC with those run flat tires rides very harsh. The CLK is noisy at any speed but handles like a dream.
Navigation system--- The nav. in the SC is extremely intuitive. The nav in the CLK is terrible.
Sound system--- The Levinson system blows away the MB system.
Comfort--- This one is a toss up.
Value for your dollar--- The SC is equipped in it's base mode with many features that are optional on the CLK. Things such as nav., premium sound sytem, heated seats, HD headlights, head light washers, illuminated door sills, full leather seats, in dash CD player, adjustable lumbar seats, etc. The nod goes to the SC.
Dealer Service--- They are both equally poor. The Ultimate Pursuit of Perfection is a nice marketing touch and nothing more. I think I found the 3 stooges at both Lexus and MB; they work in the service departments.
The 7 speed transmission--- I drove a new MB with the 7 speed and it felt like it was always looking for the right gear. Personally I did not like it. I much prefer the 5 speed.
Reliability--- No problems with the SC. The CLK has been in the shop 2 times already. However this does not surprise me since I have personaly experienced the decline in MB reliability over the years. Another subject that gets off of the topic here.
Summary--- I know this sounds like a "Definite Maybe" endorsement for both cars. Not every one is as foolish as I am to buy both but that would be my recomendation.
