Hi

The trunk mounted Comand navigation DVD drive has failed (can't read DVD's) in my 2004 S320 CDI (W220) (European vehicle)

Has anyone ever swapped this drive out? if so is it an easy swap? anything to look out for before I get the tools out and will it require any coding when the replacement drive is installed?

And, yes before anyone asks I have tried a CD 'Lens Cleaner'

Any help advice or tutorials would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi,

I've never changed a Trunk Mounted one, but I swapped a drive on a COMAND Unit (in Dash one), no coding needed :wink

Cheers Dave

It is much better to change the whole unit, rather than the optical drive.

the optical drive is mounted with special vibration resistant resin; which will most probably degrade if not lost totally.

not to mention, that balance will be out !

I replaced mine a few months ago. Comes right out with the special tool that slides into the two slots on the face plate. I had the old one out and the new one installed in less than 10 minutes. No need to remove the trunk liner. Just order the MB radio removal tool from Amazon or something.

Drive fault found!!!!

I successfully replaced the navigation DVD drive. Just for curiosity I opened up the faulty drive and discovered the probable cause of the drive fault.........water in the drive, as can be seen below.

I have no idea how water could have entered this area of the trunk, I will have to investigate further.

There is also a vent in the left rear wheel well, behind the electronics racks. If there has ever been damage to the left wheel well area, the leak could come from there. In addition, the trunk lid seal could be leaking.
