I read this and it sounds reasonable.
240 How to adjust an expansion valve. - Turbobricks Forums

One poster on this site stated that his 134 conversion gave good performance. I wonder if this is the reason. Our expansion valves could be adjusted some but you can't open too much. There are only about 5 complete threads, (.200", 5mm) on the cap that sets the spring pressure.

On eBay the valve in the photo of one listing, the valve is marked R-134. The poster might have one of these in his car.

When I went to adjust mine it started to leak. It was heavily corroded inside so the o-ring lost its seal. Opening two others showed heavy and light rust.

I'm still tackling AC gremlins in my 85 300CD. A gentle thwack with a rubber mallet to the blower motor got it going again, but it wasn't blowing cold air. I spoke with the PO who informed me he converted to R134 - so I headed up to the local parts store for a few cans.

I did speak with my mechanic before proceeding, and am glad that I did. His recommendation was to charge to 80% of spec, lest I overcharge and overpressurize the system.
