Got me a $35 OBD II code reader at HarborFreight. Girlfriend's '98 E320, 130,000 miles, no CEL, gives code P1747 pending.

I am trying to figure out what this means. All google gives me is "P1747 Electronic Gear Selector Module: Defective Interaction of CAN with control unit A1(instrument cluster)".

No problems with the vehicle, except rough idle.

Any ideas what this is, and what I should do about it?

P1 codes are manufacturer-specific, so you should be careful about searching for them via Google.

However, in this case it appears that you may have the correct interpretation. The FSM says:

A CAN fault: transmission protection malfunction from the ETC control module (N15/3).
B CAN fault: instrument cluster

Just clear it for now and see if it comes back again - maybe it was just a one-time occurence.
Rough idle probably due to other factors, e.g. engine mountings.

+ one to both of Kobus' thoughts on this one. MM are particularly suspect if the rough idle is in gear but smooths out in neutral or park.
