So guys, you can read my thread about the auto>5-speed conversion, but my clutch slips when its hot outside and when I shift quickly/hard.

I have a 9" flywheel and clutch. Over the summer I ordered a clutch for an '87 190E and got the 8.5" pressure plate and disc. Used the old flywheel and pressure plate (both worn).

Last week, I ordered a 9" pressure plate and clutch disc but it doesn't fit. (see pictures below)

This is the original pressure plate in the original flywheel. As you can see, it fits nicely.

Here is the new pressure plate (apparently for an 89-93, according to the seller on ebay)

Here's why it doesn't fit, besides the other obvious thing.

I weighed my flywheel and its about 25 lbs. As far as I know, the 2.3 8 valve had a 8.5" flywheel/clutch, and the 2.3 16v had a 9" flywheel and clutch, AND the 16 valve flywheel is lighter than 8 valve flywheel (8v ~25 lbs, 16v is 12-15lbs, I think), but the 16 valve had a heavier clutch to handle the extra power.

Here is the flywheel I have.

So, basically, what flywheel do I have?

Is it normal to have no casting numbers, no part numbers, no identifying marks of the sort on a flywheel?

I didn't notice any marks on my flywheel. Pre '87 190Es with the vacuum advance distributor (not EZL) had an 8.5" flywheel, that's what I have on my car. I had to have timing marks welded on.

'87 and later 190Es have a 9" flywheel. 2.6s also have a 9" flywheel, but the pressure plate is in a different location. Later 2.6s also have a dual-mass flywheel, but I dunno what size the clutch disc is. Probably 9" as well.

I have an '87 flywheel in my garage that's going to go in my car somewhere down the lizzine. It's a 9".

Looks like the 2.6 plate from my friend's 190e. I'd order one for an 87 from rockauto.com. cross-reference the part numbers with a 2.6 to make sure that they are different. I'll make a recommendation when I get home.

@Nfsjunkie91 The flywheel that I gave you was pulled out of an '84 2.3l. It does have the timing marks, and is also an 8.5" (I just measured the clutch disc to be sure). But that car had just had a new clutch put in it, so maybe they did the flywheel too.

As far as I remember, they switched to 9" with the DM flywheels around 88-89. The 16v is also a 9" (just measure that one too), and just out of curiosity, I measure my W124 M103 flywheel, and that's a 9.5". And each one of those is SM with timing markers.

As far as my memory serves, that looks just like the flywheel I pulled out of the 84... Depending on where you got the pressure plate from, I know Nfsjunkie91 had mentioned some of the sites getting their stock screwed up in the past.

Got the right clutch from rockauto. Quick shipping, decent price, right parts. Clutch is nice and grabby as it should be...compared to my worn everything
