Hey guys, I recently noticed a very strange and rather loud clunking noise coming from the rear right wheel of my 1992 300se. It is intermittent at times but it seems to be present most of the time. The noise is a loud knock that changes with the speed of the car. The noise is at a constant pace as long as the speed is constant. I tried taking off the wheel to see if I could find anything and everything looked normal. It’s prevalent at all speeds but i tend to notice it more at low speeds, and when I’m on the throttle. Most of my research has led me to a bad wheel bearing but I’m convinced it isn’t that because the sound is at a constant rate, and it sounds like there is someone in in the trunk banging on a piece of metal with a hammer. Any ideas or help is much appreciated. Thank you

Its probably related to Your parking brake, I would Jack up the car. Put the car on free N whatever and rotate the wheel, If u hear like a springy metalic grinding sound then its ur parking brake shoe, they tend to wear out Thats normal. I paid around 450 dollars for the job and hand brake parts.

there is some logic, agreed. another option is that dust shield on a rear wheel is touching brake rotor. or maybe brake pads are worn ... and you do not have brake pad wear sensor.

Thanks for the quick response, I’ll check exactly that out! Appreciate it.

I guess it depends on the kind of sound u hear, But if it’s springy, like a spring grinding sound then its the brake shoe. But if its just a grinding smooth sound then its your brake pards etc like Lorval said

i would say its less of a grind and more of a knock. The sound almost sounds like a metronome of something banging metal. I would be inclined to think it has something to do with brakes, becasue they are relatively old, however breaking or not breaking has zero affect on the sound.
