I just bought a 2006 CLS500 and would like the navigation option also that was not included with my package.
See the Audio and Telematics forum on this website - has lots of info. Bottom line is "yes"

Actual cost depends on whether you want the very latest - its about $3k+ fitted for the new NTG 2.5 COMAND unit. One common issue is difficulty in retrofitting a linguatronic mike and activation switch. Alternatively - see if you can find a spare original unit from a breakers yard and a friendly Merc Mechanic.

Or shell out a couple of hundred bucks on a portable !!

I own a 2006 CLS500 and I have a question about the navigation system. How can I adjust the unit so that all the street names display? All I get now are gas station icons and hospital icons. I like the GPS, the trip routing works well, I just don't find it useful under regular driving conditions if the street names don't show up.

Adjust map scale & symbol display - check COMAND manual.

I realize this is an old string but I have an "old" car! My MB dealership just told me that the GPS module in the trunk of my CLS 500 2007 (European model) is fried because of a water leak. I am hoping to have the actual part reference soon but it is the unit that also holds the GPS DVD. I was quoted $6K to replace it (including labor). When you can buy GPS units for $50 and DVD players for less this sounded insane. He tried to explain that it was the brain that ran the GPS so it was expensive but since I am in the field of technology and I know that processors are worth $10 and the 2007 GPS software was written off long ago his arguments feel on deaf ears. Is there an alternative source for this type of item?

God I hate Mercedes dealers. This is no less than out and out fraud.

Find a used unit on Ebay for $250-$300, and put it in. It's a DIY if you're even remotely mechanically inclined (it's basically 2 computer connectors in the left side of your trunk and doesn't require coding in STAR -- so no reason to pay the dealer to do it).

Send me your VIN and I'll give you a list of part numbers to search for on ebay.

I agree - it does not do much for loyalty to a brand. The VIN is WDD2193721A133864 it is a euro model. Thanks much!
For your VIN (according to Mercedes' parts catalog) the following "Navigation Processor Control Units" will work:

Oldest to Newest...

A 211 870 52 26
A 211 870 10 85
A 211 870 57 85
A 211 870 60 85

I saw a A 211 870 57 85 unit on ebay just now for $160 shipped, no hassle return if it doesn't work. Sure beats $6,000.

I hear you. Went to the dealer to pick up the car earlier today and the technician pointed out that the reason the unit was corroded is that 2 rubber hole nubs were missing in the "drain gutter" that surrounds the trunk area. This let water filter into the trunk area. Cost to insert the two nubs and to tell me that the GPS unit was fried - 234 euros. I meant to ask him about his gross margin but that would be not have led to anything useful. I asked him for a copy of the quote for the module including installation and after some hemming an hawing he said he had since learned that there were some parts that I did not need so the price was much better at 3892 euros ($4,200 at the much better exchange rate we have today otherwise it would have been $5,059). My plan is to send a short letter to the President of Mercedes France because it just seems really wrong. I wrote a letter to him 3 years ago when my 2008 R350 was diagnosed as having a design defect that led water draining around the sun roof directly to the fuse box that sits below the driver's footwell! Needless to say - the car was dead when that happened and although it was poorly parked in small village in a remote part of southwestern france I called the US MB tech support number (since it was a US model) and they walked me through getting into the car and doing some DIY testing. Bottom-line that was another 7K euro bit of fun but the MB France Prez ended up intervening and giving instructions to the local dealer to do whatever was needed to fix the problem at MB's expense (but I did not get the 7K euro back). These were the first Rs built in the US so quality was Job 4 at the time. Anyways, I really appreciate the feedback and I am immediately going to place the order. The numbers you provide match up exactly with what the dealer's quote cited except that he added an /80 at the end so that it is A211 870 60 85/80. You just saved me a bunch of money so hat's off and hi-five!
