My '99 CLK keyless entry key fob works only when I am about 2 car lengths away... Shouldn't it work from a farther distance?

My CLK is the same way. It's actually a good thing. Keyless entry and car alarms with LONG range are actually more prone to being cloned because of the bandwidth that these units work on. The wider the range the more susceptible it is. So you are actually better off with a closer range.

I guess that makes sense. However, I wonder about the panic button. I guess you could only expect that to work within 20 feet or so of the car also, thereby making it less effective.
