I've owned both an SL500 (R129, 1996) and a CLK55 (2001) so I can give you ideas from that perspective.

I like the CLK because it has a back seat. I don't specifically need one, but I like to have the space just in case i need it. Also, the CLK is a new design, even thought they changed it already.

I like the SL, because I have always thought of it as a beautiful car, and I like convertibles. The only thing I think I might not like is that the car seems small ( I have not driven one yet, I'm 6'2''). And the body has been around for some 10 years.

If you are 6'2" I would suggest you get the SL. I am short, but when tall people ride in my CLK, they just look uncomfortable. The roofline is pretty low, while the 2003 CLKs have a higher roofline. One of the guys who works for me is 6'2" and even with the seat all of the way back, he is pretty crunched.
