My 1983 300D's famously beloved automatic climate control system fan develops a high pitched squeal after use for 20 or so minutes, squeal is constant, low volume, climate control system works well otherwise. Is this a symptom of fan brushed or bearings? If bearings, can the fan be lubricated as opposed to replaced, and if so, where are the lubrication locations? Thanks.

Douglas, since when did you get an 83 300D? I remember your 80 Manila Beige 300D. I hope all is well.

The blower could just use some cleaning, see if that works too. Blow air through the fan to get it clean. Then see if there are squeals when you use your hand to turn the fan cage.

Worst case it's a new motor, best case it's just cleaning. New brushes won't hurt if you've confirmed it's getting thin and/or the squeal is gone (and the brushes are on their way out).

The blower motor is fastened in a flimsy plastic cage that holds it secure. If the cage is cracked you may hear a squeal. The motor can be removed from the cage and the cage can be repaired by gluing it then securing the motor in the repaired cage by using a band clamp as well the provided screws.

So how do I know this? :D

Woaw! I'm fried in front of the computer! My 300D is the same 1980 I put back together with much help from the forum. Many miles of trouble free economic touring, auto trans getting a bit tired...
Climate Control system was challenge to bring back to life, has worked well aside from recent squeal. Squeal is quiet now, sure to get louder. Will pull underdash, remove motor, check for cracks, etc. Don't want squeal to interfere with roar of engine at 65mph.
