84' 300d.......I can only get the climate control to operate on defrost setting with full fan and full heat. Does anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot and correct this problem.

thanks,

OOOOFA.

I am no expert but maybe this might spur some more informed replies.
1) Does AC blow cold (Is the system working)?
2) On defrost I think the AC kicks on – if AC is NG out is it related, not sure.
3) Is engine temp OK.
4) Is heat exchanger in dash fouled?
5) What happens in other heat settings – feet, head, head and feet, etc.
6) Is the fan working OK at all speed settings?
7) Check mono-valve and head unit.
That should spark something.

A/C is inoperative , belt to compressor has been remove by myself due to noisy bearings in compressor. The only setting that works other than full defrost mode is "off". So has anyone else experienced this before? I think disassembling the climate controls is a bit of an undertaking from what I can read in the manuals. I'm hesitant to chase a problem and not find a cure , could it simply be a vacuum supply problem that does not allow the flap controls to work? How are the push buttons related to the flap control system. I don't understand the simple theory of operation of the entire system other than what's stated in the owners manual. I will try your suggestions , any help is appreciated.

Vince,

May be hard to diagnose while a portion of the system is inoperative.

If the fan blows but only through the defrost try looking for vacuum leaks at the control unit and possibly the actuator at each dash vent. I think if you had a leak it would cause other issues, engine does not turn off, locks don’t lock, etc. Pop off the wood panel and control unit is there for removal.

You seem to have 2 problems.

Before we dive in, the left 3 buttons use the compressor. "E/C" does not. "O" for off does not either.

Compressor is shot, so the first 3 are inoperable. Pressing the defrost button will only work to generate heat at full blast. This is the function of this button.

"E/C" should work since compressor is not used.

Left to right:

1. Defrost (heating only @ full blast)
2. Bi-Level cooling/heating (footwell vents are open in cooling/heating mode)
3. Normal cooling/heating (footwell vents are not open)
4. Economy setting (no compressor used, outside air allowed to get into cabin)
5. OFF

My problem, as yours, was caused by numerous cold solder points in the ACC unit itself.

As you have indicated Rmac, I took the CC unit apart and found 5 cold solder joints on the connection between the main board and the wing board. I repaired the joints. Unit is functioning fine now.

Thanks to all
