When temperature setting at cold there is a very obvious clicking sound from the center dash, even the key at the II position ( Car not started). When dial the temp control towards warm (at 10 O'clock position). The clicking sound disappeared. So far the air seems working properly with cold and warm.

Anyone had similar issue?

98ML with 170k original miles.

Idaho - sounds like this has the potential to unfold as the classic air blend door motor gone bad. Search on air blend motor. Unfortunately, it does not get better with time. Photos show motor placement under dash, and the 'autopsy' of the motor with the broken plastic gear.

atmsmshr, Thanks much for the quick reply! Did some search immediately and found it's a big job! the part seems $150, how much for the labor? If I just leave it as is, what will happen, Hot air only?

idahombz, I had this same issue where I had to turn the dial further and further to get the clicking to quit until it stop working all together. It is the air blend motor and can be fixed for free if need be. Here's what I posted:

Had put this off for awhile because it was winter for one, and because the first time I took out the glove compartment to take a look for some reason I just wasn't seeing the air blend motor. So, today (getting hotter here in Vegas), I decided to take another look. To others...after you remove the glove box only which is just a few...4...I believe screws and disconnect the glove box light, just slide it out. If you reach in on the left top side and pull down the cloth backing just enough to see inside you will see a white plastic lever mechanism. Now for the really good part.....I now have ice cold air and didn't spend one penny, mess with an air bag, take off any part of the dash, radio etc., I simply turned the climate dial...which did absolutely nothing.....except!....allow me to manually move the white plastic lever to the opposite position thus switching me from hot air to ice cold air. I will probably replace the air blend motor at some future time but for the summer I have cold air and if need I can take the glove box out at winter and switch to hot air...and although I haven't tried it yet there is a small possibility that I may be able to remove the air blend motor without doing anything more than I've already done (small hands...and don't you believe the rest of that myth). Now on to my new issue which I believe to be the torsion bar bushing clicking issue.

Some may say this is temporary but when it gets cold enough to need heat I will just quickly remove the glove box and move the position of the air blend motor to the heat position.

Idaho - here is a link primarily centered around replacing the air blend motor via removal of the dashboard. (That was the method recommended by 43sqd and which I used on my 98ML). There is another DIY and video by Detane. (Not crazy about that method; but to to each his own). Dash removal is time consuming, but not soley reserved for only the mechanically gifted.

The motor will get worse and eventually fail, but if you DIY you can pick a long weekend to make the repair. Combining this job with replacement of all the instrument cluster lights may also be considered since it comes out when removing the dashboard.

Call the local dealer and ask the MB Service advisor for a labor/parts estimate for this job. The estimate will probably make your morning coffee splurt out of your nose.

Thanks so much guys!

I will order the part and wait for a good time to change it if emie319's small hand method works. Panel lights were changed 4 years ago. Amazing the ML problems are so consistent!

After almost smooth riding for the past several years, my ML starts to showing second leg of fatigues. More problems are surfacing now like, leaking rear differential, driver seats can not move up, poor suspension ( still original though)etc.. One thing for sure, without you guys help, my ML will be long gone!

ACDelco 15-72507

I fixed the same ABM problem on my truck recently. I took the airbag route, thinking that I will end up using super glue anyway for breaking some tabs else where. The only thing that I did differently is that I didn't get a new OEM ABM. Instead, I bought a ACDelco 15-72507 and replaced the cracked gear with the one in ACDelco ABM. It can give you at least $50 additional saving.

It can't be any worse than the toy plastic Mercedes OEM version.

I'm having the same problem (knocking in dash). Wondering if anyone was able to replace the air blender motor by just removing the glove box?

Also, it really sounds like its coming from the center dash vents in my 2001 ML430.

By the way; I got the quote from the dealership for this repair! $1300! $960 was the estimated labor! No thanks!

Any updates are appreciated...

The clicks definitely sound like they come from the center vent.

A new actuator can be sourced online for around $160. With 3 hours, you can remove the dashboard yourself (all instructions are within this thread and links).

Going through the airbag door risks that system deploying improperly and making a missile out of the door in an accident.
