Hi there,

I have a 1984 500 SEL (gray market) with 243k miles that's had all belts, fluids, plugs, etc..replaced within the year that I bought it. However, I've noticed that when I start and accelerate, the old car clicking noise in my engine that wasn't once so loud, has gotten louder. It does go away when the needle on the 'economy' gauge goes down, but since it's getting louder, I'm wondering if there is something else I need to check.

I've already replaced the fuel relay switch, so that can't be it. When I'm driving, it only seems to get loud when I have to speed up or idle. It passed Cali smog last year, but I'm wondering if it's just a cold-weather thing or if it's something else. I have checked throughout the other forums, but haven't really found a definitive answer. Any ideas? Or am I needlessly worrying?

Check for soot or "burn" marks on the head around where the exhaust bolts up to the heads. Could just be the exhaust manifold gaskets have let go on a cylinder or two. If the clicking keeps time with the engine revving and it goes mostly away after the engine warms up it could very easily be the gaskets.

Happened to me.

I'll look at it. Thanks!

When I bought my 30k-mile euro last year, it too had a ticking sound under acceleration. At least that's what it sounded like, but once I got it on a lift I noticed that the pipe going into the muffler was rusty-loose and it was vibrating under acceleration. I bought a full euro exhaust (manifold-back with no cats!), then had my mechanic check the timing chain just in case - no prob there.
