Can we get a list together of common CL500 ( W215 ) problems?

Like for example, these are 10 things that are common problems and these are some things that could be done to minimize or head these problems off in the future.

So, if you did X Y Z every 6 months, you could spot X Y Z before it becomes an expensive problem.

Thoughts? I tried to search for something like that...didn't see anything.

Thanks.

quaznizi4, each year model of the CL500 varies with problems varies from year to year. Here is a good reference tool that was right on the money when I bought mine used.

Also be sure if your model has any recalls, to check if Mercedes has actually repaired them. If they haven't, they may replace it for free since it was a national recall.

1. Air pump burning out. This is the stupid $400 Bosch air pump that kicks on when the engine is first stated cold. The pump sends air into the manifold to dilute the rich air/fuel mixture when the motor is cold. You can thank the EPA for that one... it dosen't actually purify anything, rather just tricks the computer to "think" it is burning cleaner... anyhow, there is a recall for the relays that operate the air pump, and they stick open causing the pump to stay running and burn out. The $40 relay burns up a $400 pump. Replacing the relay and pump are very easy, just expensive. My CL 55 got the first pump covered under recall, however I have replaced both all over again :(

2. Many people seem to have numerous ABC issues.

3. Sludge issues. Follow the 10-15K mile oil service intervals and you are sure to have this problem. I dont care how "synthetic" the oil is, no car should go past 7500 miles between oil service and filter changes... especially the 55 Kompressor cars.

4. Trasmission control module leak. On the 55 cars, there is an o-ring update that prevents oil leekage from the contol module housing in the transmission. Very cheap in parts and worth the fix.

Other than that, I have experienced very little issues with CL's. My family and I own a luxury car dealership and are partnered with a neighboring Mercedes/BMW/Porsche repair facility therefore I have owned several of almost all the late model german cars. My car of choice is my CL 55 AMG Komressor. Like most anything, if people keep up with the maintenance and service on thier CL's, they are fantastic cars! It all comes down to buying a nice one to begin with (not wrecked, salvaged or neglected). Most people who chase the ultimate "deal" on high end cars are the ones who end up with a cheap buy with expensive problems. You get what you pay for. Always request a PPI before buying at least so you know what to expect the car will initially need to get the car up to par.

With all of that long winded experience, here are the overall rules for keeping an overall happy CL in my experience.

1. Frequent Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil Services.
2. Change Transmission oil at around 75K or 5 years.
3. Always Keep clean air filters.
4. Keep good, mercedes brand belts on the car.
5. Align all 4 wheels immediately after tire replacement.
6. Brake fluid flush every 2 Years.
7. Cabin filters anually.
8. Keep sunroof track lubricated.
9. Coolant flush every 3 years.
10. Change Spark Plugs around 75K - 100K miles.
11. Avoid automatic car washes. Hand was car with car wash soap and wax at least ever 3 months. Use Lexol Leather conditioner for interior leather.

If you follow these 10 steps, you may never be able to complete a list of 10 problems, just 10 steps to preventative maintenance.

Sorry for the lengthy post, I just love CL's and really appreciate nice, well cared for automobiles after being in the business after so many years. (you wouldn't believe the junk some people let thier cars become).

Please feel free to add if anyone thinks I have Missed some important issues.

Happy Motoring :)

Thanks !

Thanks to both of you.

I was beginning to think no one would respond. This was exactly the stuff I was hoping to find.

I purchased a CL500 that had some of what I thought were "common" problems addressed already. The seller has receipts for new ABC pump, blower motor, tune up w new plugs.

You have given me a list of things to check out that I had not considered.

I'll search this forum for a list of recalls...

Thanks again.

The list is helpful although Mercedes suggested changing transmission oil every 39K miles (from a previous transmission for life). My local dealer suggested every 30K miles. My CL55 A/T leak at 25K miles and I changed the fluid while at it. The color looked fresh although there were some mud-like in the pan.

Now that's interesting.

I had a tech tell me that the transmission in a 2000 CL500 was intended to be filled for life. But I have heard people say you'd end up doing it once....like "mid life" around 75 or 80k if you wanted it to last. So I'm trying to think it through. My current line of thinking is that it won't hurt, and an ounce of prevention is better than a new transmission.

At the same time, I recall reading somewhere that with transmission fluid, you should have a test performed to check for "metal shavings" and/or contamination....and that depending on the results, changing the fluid could be a bad decision. That really didn't make sense to me at the time...but I sold the car so I never pursued the issue.

Does that make sense to any of you? Could you actually cause a problem by changing the trans fluid?

My 2000 CL500 just hit 88,000 Miles.

My issues:

1. Early ABC Pump Replacement. Back around 20K miles. Under Warranty.
2. Bubbles in the Glass in the Doors. Just live with it.
3. Creaky Ball Joints. Not that bad unless car is driven daily. It sits on the weekends.
4. CD Changer needs replacing.
5. CD in Command is having issues as well.
6. Will drain Battery if it sits for more than a week once in awhile. Trickle charger works great. One of the control modules has a drain ?

But as the previous poster mentioned. Change the oil at 8000 miles. Mine uses ZERO oil.
Time to do my Plugs and service the Tranny. Just did the Brakes and Coolant system flush. I have had the car 6 years now and it still looks great. Its a timeless body design. I did swap out my brake light lens for the later type too. Keep track that the ABC fluid is good is another important issue with any ABC equipped Benz.

These cars are heavy. Your going to burn through front pads and tires every 20,000.

But my CL is a pleasure and has been very dependable car overall.

Glad to hear somebody saying something good about these cars for once! I really got nervous when I bought mine last year and all I read was how unreliable they are & how expensive repairs are. I've had my '04 CL500 10 months now, put 8,000 miles on it. So far only paid for scheduled maintenance @ 40k and new brake pads. The brake pads on the car were not that worn, just noisy. I've had better luck with premium aftermarket pads.
I am contemplating changing my oil sooner- had maintenance at dealership @ 40k, not scheduled to go in again til 53k, seems like a lot between changes even for synthetic.

I agree. Never too soon to change the trans fluid and filter especially on the 55's. Those trannys are under a tremendous load trying to manage 493HP

i have cl500 1999,it has trouble with electricity,if stay more than 3 days without start it losses all batery power...cant find where is the problem
....

Solution...

Eject the Nav Cd if parking for extended periods of time (they sometimes will run while the vehicle is parked) and it should eliminate any draw on the battery.

I purchased my 01 CL 500 in Oct 2011. The car had 30k on the odometer when I drove it off the MB lot in New Jersey. Since then, I've gone through a set of tires, done a full brake job and have done a Level 2 service. The car has performed flawlessly. To put this perspective, I'm a salesman and on the road 3-4 days per week.. in the 11 months I've owned it I've rung up 30K.

My only issue is that both driver and passenger door windows move up and down very slowly. I've tried to reset them but that hasn't worked. Any suggestion on window issues from the forum would be appreciated.
