Hey guys,

A few minutes ago as I pulled into my driveway I noticed a chirping sound, Im not exactly sure what it was. It didn't sound like a bad bearing but almost like a belt or rubber on metal sound.I reved the engine and it was proportional to the engine RPM. Its snowing and I would like to get some clues here since I cant go out and have a look right now.

2003 ML500 82k miles.

Thanks so much, Pete

No way to tell without at least a basic look, see, listen.

The common things are the belt idler, tensioner, or failing pulley on one of the accessories.

Before you fire it up in the morning, pop the hood and check the idler pulley and tensioner pulley for play. If there is really noticeable play, I'd suggest not driving it because it may break and strand you. Both are DIY-able without having to kill yourself. ;)

If both seem okay, fire it up with the hood open and see if you can isolate the sound a bit more.

Good luck.
