The card is like a key; Two of them are delivered to the purchaser with the car when it is bought new. The card is designed to the tucked into a purse or wallet and is then recognized by the car when you are within a few feet of it.

I assume you bought this car used and were not given the card. Have you previously been been able to press the Start/Stop button and start the engine, or has it never worked? If you have been able to use the Start/Stop button and now it is not working, then that would mean the card is somewhere in the car. If it has never worked, then I am guessing the card(s) were lost and all you have is a SmartKey for use in the ignition switch. In that case, will need a new card.

You may be able to order a new card through your dealer. I am not sure if they are still available, though, because they were only made for a few years when KeylessGo was a fairly new system. After the first few years, they changed the system so that the proximity transmitter is integrated into the SmartKey.

A used key from eBay would need to be re-programmed. I tried to find a vendor who could reprogram them but was unsuccessful.

To have Keyless Go functionality likely the path of least resistance is to get a used KG module from a newer R230 and purchase from a dealer a key of the type Rodney mentioned.

I am sure some "guy" somewhere can reprogram a used KeylessGo card to your car, but I would not count on it. If you can still get a dealer to order one for you, that will be the easiest and least expensive router. Like I said, I am not sure if they are still available. For some reason, my feeble memory thinks I might have seen or heard where they had been discontinued, but I could certainly be wrong about that - your dealer will know for sure.

Bobterry's suggestion of replacing the car's KeylessGo module with a newer version so you can use a new SmartyKey instead of the card would be the only real solution if you can't get a new card. It is a bit of a complicated task, though. You will have to locate a proper KeylessGo module, install it, code it with SDS (Star Diagnosis, the official MBZ shop tool) then have the dealer change their records to indicate that your car now has the updated KeylessGo system and have them order the proper SmartKey with that feature built-in. It's not going to be easy or cheap
