Hey everyone, First off i am a new member so i would like to say hello before i start throwing questions and asking for help haha.

Anyways i have a 1997 mercedes c-280 which i bought 2 years ago. I bought this car with only one problem...no a/c. Since i bought the car i have had a few monor problems one of which i am trying to solve myself due to a $1100.00 price tag! I am trying to replace my water pump. I ordered a refurbished water pump through my local parts store for about 108.00 plus a new thermostat. So far i have removed my condensor, radiator, and belt...now my trying to get the pulley in front or my water pump out. This is where im stuck im not sure how to go about taking those odd star patterned bolts off. I was wondering also if any of you have replaced your water pumps previously? and how you went about doing it? Working on a mercedes is a completley new venture for me so any help would be greatly appreciated

Hey Liz, Welcome to the Board!

You need a Torx (star head) Screw to remove the bolt. You also want to get MB coolant.

welcome to the forum, i wish you luck with your project. You may want to post this question on the W202 c class board were more of the c280 owners will see it .

Thanks guys, Yes ive come to find out my standard set of tools seem to be a little insuffecient. I hope i have not bitten off more then i can chew in this project.

I was going to suggest posting this in the appropriate forum for additional help. Since that was taking care of already I must say you completely impress me & somewhat remind me of Jolie in gone in 60 seconds. so hot ;)

Okay! so my water pump has been taken out and now the new one is in. Really wasnt as hard as i thought it would be considering i have never worked on a mercedes and didnt use any repair manuals....Now i have yet to put back in the condensor and radiator which was literally the hardest part of the job. I took a few pics and i will post them as soon as photo bucket is back up and running. I figure this might help someone in the future and make it easier for someone replacing their water pump.:thumbsup:

You may want to replace the copper seal washers (Bypass Line Copper Seal Ring at Water Pump Housing) as well when you install your water pump, as well as water pump gaskets.

And do replace the hoses; Cooling/Coolant Hose; Bypass Hose from Water Outlet to Water Pump, Cooling/Coolant Hose; Radiator Overflow Hose, and Cooling/Coolant Hose; Water Pump Drain Pipe and dont forget to buy hose clumps.

and yes you need to change/flush your coolant to OE MB

Yes you are right i need to flush out all that old coolant and replace with MB.
Before i finish the job i need to replace those hoses ect. I had a diagnostic test ran on my car and it said i needed all of those things. I pretty much figured that since im now at 113K miles.

Here are few pics i said i would post earlier.

This one was one of the hardest skrews ive ever had to take off...it was located under the waterpump. Luckily i have really small hands so when i loosened it enough i had to use my hands to unskrew the rest...really didnt help that it was rusted and somehow bent.
