Chevy into an ML500

I'm stuffing a Chevy into a ML500, just as a novelty ride to mess with or tail

Spoiler alert, I'm working with someone who is about to shove a MCT (dct) 722.9 into a older Mercedes chassis.

So far we haven't gone beyond proof of concept, waiting for stuff to come around, install, test, all that jazz.

Sent your info up to the Gods.

As for a steering rack, I presume you just need a good 2nd hand rack? Also presuming your existing one is kaput?
I wouldnt bother rebuilding it. All the w163s steering racks are interchangeable.

edit: back to resuming the OPs topic.
My bad for carrying on.
w124 Mods - feel free to move this extra curricular stuff to w163.

Kaput is the proper word for the rack. The front differential fell out and when it spun around it split the rack in 1/2. Also the drive shaft came apart at the CV joint and tore some stuff up too.As for the rack, these seem to be a weak link and I'd rather get a new one than chance a old one. I read somewhere that they went for abut a $1000, but can't find the post or article.

I'm going to counter the naysayers here. It's a project car for fun! Why shouldn't he have fun and see if he can do it, just for the fun of doing it? Oh, I might consider using a small-block Chevy V8 for it (e. g. a 327 or 350), but that smaller inline gives plenty of room for working in the engine bay, so I can see it, certainly as a proof of concept. If he can get this going with a rolling chassis and make it driveable with that engine, I presume the same could be done with an I-6 or a small-block V8. Hey, there's a guy who successfully converted an M113 V8 from fuel injection to carburetor, and it works...just because he had the itch to try it. That is the beauty of the noble tradition of car modding.

So, I applaud what he's doing here.

0 to 60 in 3.25 seconds with 785horsepower. Those guys are great for knowledge too.

yeah, wtf a old pushrod 4 cyl?!? I don't know why anyone would bother.
The V8 would require too much work. The i6 would work but a tight fit fore&aft. I have a couple of these 4cly and figured this would be something fun and different. Also in Ohio when you put an eariler engine in a car, the title goes with the earlier engine, so this 1963 engine will allow me to pass the emission tests. When finished I'll have a comfortable daily fun toy to drive around the flat-lands of northwest Ohio. But I'll agree with you, is it really worth the effort, nope, but then ,neither is golf.
