Cheaper replacement for the CV boots on the front axle of W124 4matic vehicles.

I was going to change all the CV boots on the front axle of my 4matic. When I heard price of the original parts, I was stunned. The local dealer, Veho in Finland were asking over 500 euros ($675) for the boots. "Oh nutking fucs" I thought.

I did little research and I found out Fiat has suitable CV boots at reasonable price. 9 euros ($12) apiece including grease and fastening clips, 36 euros ($49) total.

To the outer joint I installed a CV boot from Fiat Scudo (1996-2001). See picture above. Left one is used original part and right one is new Fiat boot. Really no mechanical difference.

To the inner joint I installed a CV boot from Fiat Ducato (1988-1993). See picture above. Left one is used original parts and right one is new Fiat boot. Little mechanical differences exist.

See picture above. The CV boots are installed. They fit perfectly.

If you need installation instructions, please have a look following links:

Finally, for the collar nut no special tool is required. Ordinary 30mm 12-point socket will do fine.

I think I speak for the all of the 4matic owners, Thank You! Great research!
I second that! Do you have the part numbers?
Do you have the part numbers?
I do not have part number for the Fiat boots but here are pictures with dimensions (in millimetres) of them. Pictures will help you find suitable CV boot from any car. Just check the dimensions are close enough.

Hs anyone in N.A found an online store that will ship these over the pond? Any help appriciated. Thanks

How about Fiat Parts & Supplies?

You can also print out the pics with dimensions and talk to your car part dealer to find out cv boots which are close enough from a N.A. vehicle. I am sure there are one.
Here is the information on the W/S124 inner boot substitute I have been able to dig up as referenced above. The size is ~24mm diameter x ~95mm diameter x ~150mm height, with some deviation among different manufacturers.

Note: I am not 100% sure I've got these part numbers right, so check before you buy based on them (e.g., boot alone, or a kit with grease and bands). Additionally, I am not 100% that I have correctly identified the inner or outer boot number. It appears the outer boot on the Fiat/Peugeot/Citroen is what we are interested in. Some additional research might be helpful.

In using one of these alternative boots, I would probably want to reuse the center sleeve from the originl boot (pictured below). I believe it is important in that it prevents an out of balance condition with the boot when slops of greaser settle in the extending folds prior to driving off. The out of balance condition is probably what kills many of the aftermarket boots. It should not be too hard to slide the sleeve in the Fiat boot and hold it in place with a tie-wrap. The sleeve will allow the center portion on the boot to slide over the axle without wearing as the tripod joint functions.

As a follow on fyi, I asked the only Ebay seller in Europe with world-wide shipping indicated what would be the shipping charges for the boot to the United States. I was told it would be approximately $250. I viewed it pretty much as a, "F-O, we don't want to deal with you." Essentially all others listed shipping as only Europe.
I'm still staggering over the original post. Just the *boot* costs over $500????? Really??? This isn't for a reman axle assembly???
Related to boot replacement

Just yesterday I replaced a front passenger side axle rebuilt by CVJ in Denver. Nice people, and great product. They ship one to you for $159. and charge a $125 core that is refunded when you return the rebuildable core. Rebuilt joints and new boots for $159 plus shipping (let's say $200 with two way shipping). It might not be worth the trouble to reboot the axle; especially if you have to buy a tool to tighten the clamps properly. PM me for contact info. I had posted it a few years back but can't find the thread.

Kevin, isn't this the company you used?

In any case, why hassle doing this yourself when you can just R&R the axle???
Sorry I missed this...just throw a hammer at me if I miss any 4Matic questions!

Yes, CVJ Axles is who I used and they were roughly the price Andy gave. (About $330 out the door and back into my hands)
I really don't see how you can afford not to have CVJ do them. If they have mileage, they will have considerable wear/play from the torque applied every time you take off from a start.....maybe not always evident, but they creep up on you all of a sudden. Even buying the cheap after market crap boot kits and not counting your labor, you're still far ahead to let CVJ reman yours. And unless they got some in, they are remanning your originals.

I went to all the trouble to reboot mine and then they started to vibrate(speed related) sometime after....more information on my recent thread;"Wobble Wobble" It's not really an issue of finding the right boot kits to cross for less than OE, it's the wear in the bearing cups etc...you can NOT fix that yourself.

Kevin,

Yes I had that exact problem; vibration at speed and when accelerating at low speed with the wheels turned there was a pronounced shudder to the passenger side axle. I could shake the inner joint up and down and it had like .050 -075 inch play! The refurb from CVJ is tight as new.

Andy,
Yes and as careful as I was, it was worse after I redid the boots. But in all fairness I had the 4Matic turned off all spring, summer and early fall. When I turned it back on again after the re-boot, the vibration was horrible at slow speeds and scary at hwy speeds....but not as bad. Of course the half axles are always turning, but the big difference being when power was put to them or not.

To repeat my original suggestion, I don't see how you cannot have CVJ reman them for that price. Like Steve used to say, just rebooting is like "walking over dollars to pick up pennies".

I took the plunge and ordered an OE Fiat boot from a UK Ebay Seller. I didn't want to muck with FEBI, Meyel, or a bunch of other aftermarket junk, so when this one with worldwide shipping popped up in the daily Ebay search I have been running since I started this thread I thought it was about time to act on it.

Paul, I'm anxious to see how this turns out for you. A respected friend/forum member in Canada that has/had 4Matics said that the rubber boot kits CVJ uses don't weather well past their warranty. Could be the cold & the salt combo...dunno.

I do know that when I went to the effort to reboot my front axle half-shafts I ordered two kits...pushed the buy button twice and wound up with four kits. Anyway, only one kit had 'Germany' written on the boots, the others had no writing. I think it was all World-Pac stuff.

The kits not designated 'Germany' had a slightly different, palpable feel to them and slightly different in appearance from the 'Germany' kits.

You probably know this already, but don't use any petroleum distillate products cleaning the axles. Any residual cleaning fluid will gas into the new boots over time and weaken them.

Lol...I collect chainsaws and I have NOS parts tucked away everywhere. A lot of duplication too, unfortunately.

I had to reboot both my CVJ done front axles. Parts of the boots were weather checking. I dug into my old boxes and found enough boot parts and grease to replace both and fortunately, they both had 'Germany' stamped on them.

I contacted Steve at CVJ and told him about the weather check problem with mine and many others, especially Canadian owners. He acted like he was not aware of the problem, but would research the issue. His boots were lasting like three yrs before they started to weather check.

Shortly after that, his price for reman 4Matic axles soared. He offered to redo mine, but I never did send them back.

My local NAPA used to sell the clamp sizes for CV boots, but since has stopped. I went on Amazon and bought a kit where you make your own clamps. I gotta say, once you get onto it, they're pretty cool! All I can say is throw away their instruction and go with your intuition in this case.
