Hi all. This is my first post to this group. I have a 1999 S320 with the charcoal filter. The vehicle is approaching 4 years old (bot in March, 1998 as an 'early out' 1999 model) with 55,000 miles.

The book says to replace the charcoal filter at 4 years or 75K miles. My first question is about what will this cost (U$D)? Second, I am wondering how a filter can deteriorate in 'time' versus mileage? In other words, how does my charcoal filter know to die at 4 years but low miles when yours might have more miles but not yet be 4 years?

Also, what is the 'dust filter' and the 'air filter' and the 'air recirculating filter'. Unfortunately, as good as I am with maintenance, I think that only the air filter has been replaced to date.

Any info would be appreciated. I believe in complete maintenance but I don't want to overmaintain.
