Hi all. This is my first post to this group. I have a 1999 S320 with the charcoal filter. The vehicle is approaching 4 years old (bot in March, 1998 as an 'early out' 1999 model) with 55,000 miles.

The book says to replace the charcoal filter at 4 years or 75K miles. My first question is about what will this cost (U$D)? Second, I am wondering how a filter can deteriorate in 'time' versus mileage? In other words, how does my charcoal filter know to die at 4 years but low miles when yours might have more miles but not yet be 4 years?

Also, what is the 'dust filter' and the 'air filter' and the 'air recirculating filter'. Unfortunately, as good as I am with maintenance, I think that only the air filter has been replaced to date.

Any info would be appreciated. I believe in complete maintenance but I don't want to overmaintain.

No one replaces the charcoal filter -- don't even worry about it. The dust filter (also called a 'pollen filter') should be replaced, however. Think of it as your car's equivalent to your home's furnace filter. We carry it for all models -- it's relatively inexpensive.

Wolfgang, thanks a lot for the link to the filter changes by Brian Imdieke. Great article, this is what discussion groups should be all about,Good Clear information. Thanks to him and his son for the work to produce and share it._____HARRY_____
