Just a bad design. One important thing...when you change the oil , step 1- remove oil filter. step2-drain oil. step3-replace filter. step 4- fill crankcase with oil. If you do the filter last a quart of oil drains down into the pan.(the one you just put the plug back in)!!

If oecko has a gas engine, he can't fill his filter first.(unless he has an 84 190 with the canister). Diesel's can be filled. If you are worried about a "dry" start, crank engine with fuel stop depressed, or a gas engine pull the pickup wire off the ignition module. (the green one). Don't rule out that cranking can't cause damage. It can. As for the oil, 15w-40 is a great year round oil for a diesel, no matter where. As for brands, we use SHELL ROTTELLA T in my shop. Ask any knowledgeable truck driver what he or she thinks. I am ready for cross examination..........ps. read the Lucas oil additive post.
