OK, anyone if you know how to do this, please let me know. What I thought would be a simple 1-2-3 thing to do has me quite flustered. I must be mssing something quite simple as I know these things get stolen quite often. I have a 560 SEL if you need the model to help me out.
--Thanks in advance

I have a friend who works at a MB dealership in Southern Califoria who sends me the hood ornaments for around $10 a pop (I have had so many stolen that I lose count). I have no idea if this is a retail price or if he is just being nice to me. I have gotten them for my old 1976 240D, my old 1978 300D, and my current 1979 300 SD. So far as I can tell, they are all identical (although I once saw one for a 560 which was quite different), although I must admit that I have never had two of them in my hands at once to compare. The way the one that fits all of my MBs works is as follows: take it out of the plastic wrap, and THEN DON'T SCREW WITH IT! I played around with the first one I received and got it locked into the 'installed' position and almost had to get another one before I finally figured it out. Completely remove the original ornament holder (once the ornament itself is gone, the spring retainer should also be gone, and removal is easy). Drop the new one into the hole the only way it fits, about a quarter-turn counter-clockwise (looking down from the top) from the position you will want it in when finished. While holding it all the way down in the hole, carefully twist the top of the holder (not the moveable ornament itself) clockwise, towards the positon it should wind up in. About three-fourths of the way there, you should hear a click, and you're done!
At least that's the way it always works for my MBs. For all I know, the new ones have electronic security built-in, or some other such foolishness. I hope this helps.

Good luck!
