Hey there, It is very cold with lots of snow and SALT on the roads so it is the time of year when I garage my Benz. Since it is resting I want to do filter replacements on both the Gas and Transmission filters. Do you guys do you're own or just take it to a place for this? I have read that the gas filter replacement is very messy with the gas going every where. I can turn a wrench but have never done this before. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks as always.

It is messy but not too bad. You will have to get new crush washers (sealing rings) for the banjo fittings, a catch bowl or oil change pan and have a hose clamp handy too. The key is to not loosen any fittings that you do not have too otherwise it can get real leaky. It is a DIY job but be very methodical. I have attached some drawings that I think will help you.

Oh if you do not know, the fuel delivery assembly is located behind the rear axle on the passenger side.

I just did mine too a few months ago. Make sure that you do the job with the car nearly empty. Siphon as much of the fuel out as you can first. Then drain it out of the main fuel line. I did mine up on the hoist so it was easy to get at everything and drain it. Can't imagine doing it on the ground.

It didn't look like my filter had ever been changed! It was so completely blocked that I could not blow air through it with my mouth. The can has a lot more pickup not that it has new pumps and a new filter.

Good point about the tank being nearly empty!
I backed the car up on some tire ramps and had plenty of room to even use a mechanics crawler under there. If you don't have access to a lift (that would be alot easier!!) you can do it with some car ramps and it is very good access you are just on your back.

I did mine a couple of months ago. You can do the fuel filter on the ground, just make sure that you get a good hose clamp to block off the exit hose from the fuel tank and there will be no need to drain the tank.

These do an excellent job: - Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

If you're replacing the transmission fluid, make sure you drain the torque converter as well as most of the fluid is in it. There is a small hex bolt in the torque converter that will will need to remove to drain the fluid. There is only one so as a general rule you will have to turn the torque converter almost 360 degrees before you get to by pushing on it with a screw driver. I have found that no matter which direction you go, you always end up having to to turn it 360 degrees :).

Most of the service files are in the forum archives to be found with a 2 word search of 3 letters or more.
Check the 'Welcome to the Forum' announcement / tutorial on top of the W126 page.
