that is pretty complicated issue and I think above the DIY forum level.
I had several experiences with W210 that they have lot of computer programs that were never disclosed to the consumer. Like how many owners know the engine will shut down with bad overheating?
I don't know what could be the loop in your case, but I can imagine the computer is comparing engine speed with wheel sensors speed and when it is not up to the program, it is assuming the car is spinning wheels.
Bottom line -that would be a job for an expert with Star Computer.

Nightmare, I know of two attempts on E55 Kompressor cars to change ratio.
One went back to original ratio and added Qualif, and the other suffered for months. I'll see if I can find the thread.

You have a major problem! Assuming that gear ratio is offered by the factory. Yes the engine and transmission control modules will need to be updated to reflect the gear change, however if the gear ratio was or is not offered by the factory you have a major problem.

You will need a dealer or someone with DAS Xentry with developer mode activated to do the investigation and updating. Very Good Luck!!

Found one of the last threads over on MBWorld that has good information on what the W211 guys had to do. You might want to try changes that can be done in star first cause maybe the W210 is different than a W211, then if you still have a problem, call Cory, he can do it but $$$$$

Good question, the ECU will not work 6 cyl vr 8cyl but I assume you are talking about the TCU, I don't know if it would be plug & play, or if you would need STAR to "marry" it to the car/ECU.

Have you downloaded the fault codes you have now?
You should have at least one if the car goes in to limp mode.

The engine, transmission and differential are all matched with the ECU and TCU. Neither will work if going from 6 to 8 cylinders or the reverse.

Look at the transmission number of where the differential came from and does it match yours??

Like I have said if the differential ratio was never offered within your models engine and transmission, I do not see how it will work!!

I just swapped the differential on my 01 4matic wagon. In this case it was like for like (3.07) ratio and I've had no issues. If you search for recent threads under my user ID there is a printout of various differentials and what models they were installed in.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but with my case, if I'm pulling out my E320's 3.07 differential and installing an E430 2.82 differential, does this means it will work without having to reprogram the TCU? Both differentials are from a W210.

TCM needs to be recoded for the new diff. 99 is EGS51, so it's a little problematic.
