Some people: Oh yes you got to change it every xx.000 miles.
Others: Fluid in these transmissions is for life. There is no dip stick anyways.
I don't have a leak, I bought my 2001 S55 with 67000. I am not sure if it has been changed or not. Should I change it so I won't regret it?
Or will changing the fluid cause problems as I used to hear years back?

I just changed mines at 100k and it runs a little smoother. Even if you change it, it won't be 100% fresh because there is always fluid in the lines you can't flush out. I want my transmission to last, you can buy the dip stick for like $40

Change filter, gasket, fluid and connector to suit preferences. Or risk buying a new tranny. W220 uses 722.6 trans, which is the same as in E-class W210. See E-class forum stickies for all the debate and consensu outcome (change). The W210 has been using the 722.6 tranny for a few more years, and has more operating experience.

+1.

there is no dipstick, but there is a pipe for a dipstick. Then I was buying ffluid at the dealer, the guy on the till told me: initially Merc said its lifetime oil, but then the cars got off the warrenty- all of the sudden they said you need to change the fluid. :) and start charging customers for it.

I did changed the fluid, filter, gasket and the electrical plug.
its a sump and converter, usually fluid in the sump is replaced, but you cannot get the fluid out of the converter. unless box removed from the car. so some old will be there anyways. Merc itself told me they dont change the fluid in the converter, only in the sump. And that any local garage can do.

I'd suggest starting by reading the OUTSTANDING 722.6xx FAQ thread in the W210 stickies:
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210-e-class/1463460-mercedes-benz-722-6-transmission-faq.html

IIRC the five-speed was introduced in the W140 ca. 1996 and was deployed fully across the line by MY 98. Earlier years had various bugaboos, most of which were ironed out by MY 00-01. The silly "maintenance free" crap continued until around MY 04, when MB started recommending an initial change at 39,000 miles. That recommendation carried into the 722.9 transmission as well.

The MB fluid is special in that it bonds with and suspends particles that would tend to clog filters and layer pans with conventional fluid. But it does not last forever. That said, it will most assuredly last for the life of the transmission; however, most agree that lifespan is shortened by never changing the fluid.

If it's not clear by now, I'm in the camp that says change it (and change the leak-prone connector as well while the fluid's out, that makes it a ten-minute additional job). That said, though, it must be done properly and with spec fluid. If the plan is to cut corners, then leave well enough alone.

Yes, change it. You can even flush it from the cooler return line on the right side, this way you most of the old fluid out.

Guys, do we really have to write "MY 00, 01, 98" etc. Doesn't 00 imply year 2000 and we know it is a Mercedes. Just curious.

Yes, we must, or we shall be banned forever!!!! :twak:

Just kidding. Most folks will understand it either way.
