Am replacing the center support bearing on my 2000 ML430. After removing the old bearing, I have a question about the appearance of the propeller shaft. Is this part of the shaft or a remnant of the support bearing that I need to remove? I am thinking it is part of the bearing race but it looks like it would have to be cut off to be able to fit the new bearing on. Am I on the right track?

Steve that looks like the inner bearing race to me. I just took the old support to the scrape yard otherwise would give you a photo .

Do you get the new one so to to compare the two.

Thanks, Wally. I do have the new bearing but it is hard to see anything with the rubber housing and all. It does look like it would not fit over the shaft. Any suggestions on the best way to cut those things off without damaging the shaft?

A Dremel with a small cut-off wheel.. What's your plan for pressing the new bearing on ? (I'm guessing you don't have a press)

They are on pretty tight but not so tight
That you need a hydraulic press. I think I put the one end in a vice and tapped at it with a hammer and punch or chisel till it was off.

Then cleaned up the shaft, applied a film of grease and tapped the new one on. Just make sure you orientate the bracket the correct way

I think I had a nice length of pipe that
I used to help set the new one.
Basically followed what he did in this video.

Actually, I just got a press from Harbor Freight. Used it to get the old one off.

Thanks for the vid. Getting my old one off was a nightmare. I sure hope it goes back on easily.
