Anyone know where I can find instructions for installing the cellphone kits into a MB, specifically clk?? I found a referece to www.mbusaphones.com, but that is password protected. I guess MB wants to force us to pay $$ to have it installed and heaven forbid we learn a bit technical knowledge about our cars.

I bought the cell phone kit for my clk 430 today.
Besides being overpriced. I was really suprised to see how complicated this damn 'kit' is....without a single instruction pamplet.

There are several modules that and panels that need to be installed...somewhere in the car. I found an electronics bay right behind the rear seats, but that doesnt seem to be the right place, although I do see the teleaid equipment there.

On the 'plus' side, I understand the high cost a --bit- more, as their is considererable more electronics than just the handset, but its still overpriced.

Thanks in advance.

Let me know if you get any good information. I would like to know the answer as well. On another note, I have heard the CD changer is a breeze to install. Anyway, let me know if you hear anything concerning the phone system.
G
Where did you get your phone and, if you don't mind, what was the price? Did you get the install completed?
G
What year is your CLK430?

There are a TSBs on CD changer/phone installation

'99 CLK430: TSB Number P-82-112
'00 CLK430: TSB Number P-82_64-129 (also these TSBs might be helpful S-82_70-124 and S-82_64-123)
I don't have the numbers for the '01 CLK430, but I could probably find it in the Fedworld.gov automotive archives if you like.

Your dealer may print you a copy of these TSBs for free. Otherwise, you can order them directly from MBUSA or subscribe to Alldata.com.
G
Thanks, its an '01...how much is alldata?
G
Alldata is $25/year, but never has current model year TSBs...

I'll see if I can search through the Fedworld info for the '01 phone TSB number. I'm sure the info is different since the '01 Timeport phones are different from previous years.
G
total was $1300...more

Its 495 for the handset and $800 for the kit.

The kit includes about a half dozen items, of which 3 are active electronic components, including a fiber optic transceiver, a control unit looking device, and an RF device with in and outs.

There's also trim work, cables tyes, a mounting bracket (which I can't figure out what it bolts to), other minor pieces of hardware.

Im thinking about this gear which appears to be custom for Mercedes, the amount of engineering and the payback over x/units, I guess Im not suprised that it cost so much for the kit. That said I don't believe there is an excuse for the handset costing double what is essentially the same device that I can buy retail.

I called the dealer, it cost another $200 to have it installed. I have that scheduled for Monday in case I don't find the answers before then.

Btw, you can activate the handset ahead of time and use it. Its a nice, good looking phone.

Darren
Here is the info I found...

Here's what I found when I searched through the 'mercedes.zip' archive at the Fedworld.gov automotive information webpage for 'CLK,' 'Phone,' and '2001.' I think the first two items are the ones you want and the last two are just the manuals that come with the phone (CDMA or TDMA). MBUSA charged $5.00 shipping and handling per total order the last time I ordered something.

-------------------------------------------------
Description: SI: VOICE ACTIVATED CELL PHONE/CD CHANGER INSTALLATION
Manufacturer: Mercedes-Benz
Model(s): CLK320, CLK430
Year(s): 2001
Make:
Part Number: P-SI-82.64/139
Publication Type: TECHNICAL SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN
Price: $2.00 (PLUS TAX, SHIPPING & HANDLING)
Ordering Information: Call 1-800-FOR-MERCEDES.
Credit Card orders only. THanks!...I really appreciate your help!

See inside for some info [not complete though]

Im in Europe (UK), so I only know about this on UK cars.

The fibre optic 'transciever' is in fact the interface between the handset and the audio systems. The fibreoptic bus is called D2B and CD, head-unit, phone, teleaid and on latest (S, C and MY2002 ML) the amp. - Its a box with a 25 way d-type at one end, and a rectangular hole for the fibre optics (probably with a green protection plug!)

The box, and the amplifier for the aerial go on the plate, the plate attaches inside the boot on the right hand side, above the amp, in the rear wing - this can be seen when U remove the right hand side boot liner trim. It is secured with 3 or 4 rivet like things, remove the centre of the rivet with a flat screwdriver then pull out the outside bit. One is only visible from the inside of the car when you put the back seat down. You'll also have to remove the 'tie down' eye on that side of the boot (at the seat side of the boot). One is in the middle at the top, and one attaches it to the plastic trim that goes round the rear edge of the boot. You have to bend the trim quite a bit, and be careful not to break that rear-edge of the boot trim (its quite flexible).

Now heres the difficult bit - you have to connect the unit into the fibre ring, I beleive the fibre is in the boot there alreasdy with something that loops it together ... And, once you have installe d it you must have the dealer tell the head unit about the new controller - ****** OR TELEAID MAY NOT WORK PROPERLY *******
Maybee thats what the last bit you have that makes things easier ? We dont get Teleaid here in the UK

I dont know what the 3rd device is, we dont have that here.

If you post pictures of all the bits , i'll try and tell you what they are and where they fit ....
In fact, it would be really useful for the community if you could do that , and post a picture of the connectors in the boot that things connect to ...

MB dealers have this info, Im suprised the dealer you bought it from wont photocopy it for you ....

Dont forget, you need to get the dealer to reconfig the head unit to make this all work reliably - its 10 mins on their star diagnosis tester ...

Hope that helps !

Thanks...thats really good info. (more)

I looked at the kit oce again and I only found 2 electronic items.

I did take another look at the cable that plugs into the handset. At the other end, there is an rj45 connector, and its clear that it plugs into the bottom of the console. however there is also a coax and I cant quite find what it plugs into.

It looks like I would need to remove the console o plug this in. Any advice here?

Thanks!
darren
See inside

The RJ45 (although its 10 way not 8) is the control signals, the other the aerial - you should be able to remove the two screws in the middle of the glovebox, which loosens the console enough to find the coax cable down by where the rj45 socket is ..

Removing the console is a nightmare, so I highly doubt that that would be needed, the cable must be just out of sight.

It may bee you can see it if you remove the panel around the gear shifter. To do this, pull up the black plastic surround to the gear shift (its just a push fit) - use only your finger nails .. Then you can pull up the wood panel with all the switches on really easy, again its a push fit, held in by that black plastic surround. Easiest to have the stick in N when doing this..

If U do get a chance to lay out the kit and take a photo , and of the cables in the boot (and where U found them), and upload it sometime that would be really useful !!

BTW, has the metal plate that this stuff mounts on got 3 bolts sticking out of it - if so, then its the same as the european part and goes in the same place. it bolts onto the inside wing panel above the amp, with the control units facing outwatrds towards the wing - I think that will make it obvious when U have it in bits !

Thanks...with your help I was able to get it installed.
I still needed the dealer to activate it, but that cost much less than having the whole thing installed.

thanks again!
darren
