[Down South]

I have a CEL on my 97 E320 so I went and had the code read and showed the code "P0410" Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction. I also get this intermittent whining noise that comes on about every 15 to 20 seconds when at a stop light. I don't know if it comes on while driving because I can't hear it, but i certainly hear it while at the light. Whats this and is it a DIY'er kinda job?

Secondary air injection is an air pump that blows air into the exhaust on startup to help the cat converters come up to temp quicker. It is likely that either the relay or the pump is at fault. Try a new relay first. If the relay has left the pump running continuously the motor may be burnt out.

I don't know on your car I am afraid. But I had a similar problem on my sl55 which came with a handy wiring diagram that lists all the fuses and relays.

The relay should be in the fuse box in the engine bay.
