Catalytic Converter Options

My catalytic converters are starting to rattle on my 2000 E55. I live in a state where they visually inspect the exhaust so I can't just take them out completely. I search the forums but the posts are so old and wanted to see what the current thoughts are in this subject.

The OEM cats cost way too much to even consider. From my internet searches I have found two aftermarket companies that make direct fit cats for the W210 E55: Davico and DEC.

Beyond that, I guess another option would be to take it to an exhaust shop and have them come up with something custom using universal cats from Magnaflow, Eastern, etc.

Anyone have any recent experience with Davico, DEC, or the custom option for their E55?

When you checked with the dealer did you check the price for a new one or a re-manufactured? The reman is actually a new one but a lot cheaper. If that's too expensive then just order a magnaflow or flowmaster universal cat. Then go to a muffler shop and have them cut the old one out and weld in a new one.

Before your post, I just looked at online OEM prices for new cats. However after reading this I did call the dealership. They did a search and told me there are no re-manufactured cats available :(

I have an appointment with a custom exhaust shop next week. Hopefully they can provide a good solution.

I had the same issue recently on my 1999 E55. It is now booked in with Hayward & Scott (exhaust specialists, UK) for a complete (ie. front and centre section, with cats) custom exhaust made to match OEM spec. Mentioning only because it means they will have the exact measurements should anyone else want to do the same thing in the future. They use metal 200 cell cats (almost certainly universal ones).
